An intensive course packs your lessons into a few weeks instead of months. For people living or studying in central Doncaster, it can be the quickest way to a licence, as long as you can give it several hours a day and have your theory test passed.
Every intensive course with Alma begins with a free assessment drive. Your instructor picks you up in the centre and watches how you handle the car, from moving off on a quiet street to your judgement at busier junctions. Complete beginners are welcome too; the assessment simply tells us where you are starting from.
After the drive we set the length of your course and give you a price based on the hours you actually need. Course prices are explained after the assessment, and our prices page lists our standard lessons and packages if you want to compare.
You must pass your theory test before you can take the practical test, so we ask intensive learners to have it passed, or booked very soon, before the course starts. The test has 50 multiple-choice questions, with a pass mark of 43, and a hazard perception part with 14 video clips, where you need 44 out of 75.
If you live in the centre, the theory test centre at Fraser House on Netherhall Road is close by. Book it through GOV.UK, and use our tips for passing the theory test first time to prepare.
No two courses run the same way, but a typical day might use the area like this:
Breaks are built in. Several hours behind the wheel is tiring, and a short stop to talk through mistakes helps the learning stick.
As the course moves on, more of your driving heads north-east, towards the Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Way. You will drive out through Wheatley on Church Way and Wheatley Hall Road, and along Thorne Road through Town Moor and Wheatley Hills, so the area feels familiar by test day.
The practical test is booked as part of your course. Near the end it is worth adding a full mock test, marked the same way as the real thing, so you know exactly what to tighten up. You can read about that on our mock driving test in Doncaster town centre page.

It depends on your assessment drive. A learner who has driven before may need far fewer hours than a complete beginner. We set the length after the free assessment, so you are not paying for hours you do not need or squeezing into a course that is too short.
You can start lessons, but you cannot take the practical test until you have passed the theory test. Because the practical test is booked as part of an intensive course, we strongly advise passing your theory before the course begins.
