If you want a licence in weeks rather than months, Wheatley is a smart place to base an intensive course. The test centre by Sandall Park is close by, so less of each day is spent travelling and more is spent on the roads that matter.
On an intensive course every hour counts. Learners from the far side of Doncaster can spend a good chunk of a lesson just reaching the north-east of the city, where the test centre sits on Shaw Wood Way. From Wheatley, Wheatley Hall Road takes you there in a few minutes.
That leaves more of each session for the skills you need: roundabouts, manoeuvres, independent driving and the kind of junctions you will meet around the test centre. It also means the area will feel completely familiar by test day.
It helps with timing on the day too. If your test is booked for the morning, a short warm-up drive from home through Wheatley gets you to Shaw Wood Way settled, rather than flustered after a long trip across Doncaster.
Every Alma intensive course starts with a free assessment drive. Your instructor picks you up in Wheatley and asks you to drive, or, if you are new to it, starts from the basics on a quiet road. They are watching how you control the car and how you read the road.
From that, they set the length of your course and give you a price that matches it. Two people booking on the same day can end up on very different courses, which is how it should be. You can see our standard lessons and packages on the prices page.
The practical test is booked as part of your intensive course, and you cannot sit it without a theory pass. So it makes sense to have your theory test done, or at least booked, before your course begins. It is taken at Fraser House on Netherhall Road and has two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions, where you need 43 right, and 14 hazard perception clips, where the pass mark is 44 out of 75.
Book through GOV.UK and see our advice on passing the theory test first time.
Breaks are part of the plan. Several hours of driving is tiring, and short stops to talk things through help the learning stay with you.

It depends on your assessment drive and on test availability. We set the length of your course after the free assessment, and the practical test is booked as part of it. We will be honest about how long we think you need.
You need a theory pass before you can take the practical test, so we recommend having it passed before an intensive course begins. That way your practical test can be booked without delay.
They can be. Several hours of driving a day takes concentration, so we build in breaks and keep the plan realistic. Most people find that frequent practice helps them improve faster than weekly lessons.
