Mock driving test in Wheatley

Wheatley learners have the test centre on their doorstep, which makes a mock test here especially realistic. You drive the same kind of roads you will face on the day, marked exactly as an examiner would, and finish with a written debrief.

Why a mock from Wheatley feels so real

The Doncaster practical test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park in Wheatley Hills, off Thorne Road beside Sandall Park. That means a mock test from Wheatley can use roads right beside it: Wheatley Hall Road and the Shaw Lane Roundabout, plus Barnby Dun Road and the A18 heading towards Edenthorpe.

DVSA does not publish test routes, so no one can tell you exactly where you will go. What a mock does is put you on roads like the ones you will meet on test, under test conditions, so nothing comes as a shock.

What happens on the day

Allow around two hours. The driving part takes roughly the same 40 minutes as a real test, and the rest is the debrief. Your instructor runs it just like an examiner:

  1. You start by reading a number plate from 20 metres to check your eyesight.
  2. You answer a tell me question before driving, then a show me question on the move, perhaps using the washers on Thorne Road.
  3. You drive independently for about 20 minutes, following a sat nav or road signs, perhaps towards the M18 or Edenthorpe.
  4. You complete one reversing exercise, such as a parallel park or a bay park, or pulling up on the right and reversing about two car lengths.
  5. You may be asked to do an emergency stop, as happens on some real tests.

Marked on the DVSA sheet

Your instructor marks the mock on the same DVSA sheet an examiner uses. Each fault is graded in one of the DVSA categories, from minor driving faults up to serious and dangerous ones. On a real test you need no more than 15 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults to pass.

Afterwards you go through the sheet together, fault by fault. You also get a written debrief to take away, so you can see exactly where to focus before your test, whether that is lane choice at the Shaw Lane Roundabout or observation at Thorne Road junctions.

Things learners notice on a mock

  • How quiet the car feels when your instructor stops coaching and only gives directions.
  • How easy it is to miss a lane sign on the approach to a busy roundabout when you are following a sat nav.
  • How much the eyesight check and the show me question can unsettle you if you have not practised them.
  • How long 40 minutes of concentration really is.

Spotting these in a mock means they will not surprise you on the real day.

When a mock is most useful

Book a mock if your practical test is a few weeks away and you want to know where you stand. It is also very helpful if you have failed a test before, because it shows whether the problem has been fixed.

Many learners on an intensive course add one near the end. See intensive driving courses in Wheatley for more.

A mock can also settle the question of whether to keep your test date. If the debrief shows several serious faults, you may decide to move the test and spend the time on more lessons instead.

Mock driving tests in Wheatley: your questions

How close is the test centre to Wheatley?

Very close. The Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Way is in Wheatley Hills, close to Sandall Park. A mock from Wheatley can easily include roads like those around it.

Will my mock follow the real test route?

DVSA does not publish test routes, and examiners can choose different roads. A mock covers the kind of roads and junctions you will meet around the test centre, so you are ready for anything.

Do I get feedback after the mock?

Yes. Your instructor goes through the DVSA marking sheet with you and gives you a written debrief to keep. It shows exactly what to work on before your real test.

Can my instructor come on my real test?

Yes, if you ask. Your instructor can sit in the back during your practical test. They cannot help you, but they will see how you drove and can talk it through with you afterwards.
