Feeling anxious about driving is far more common than people admit. Our nervous driver lessons in Wheatley begin on the quietest streets we can find and only move on when you say so, with an instructor who will never rush or criticise you.
We think of nervous driver lessons as a ladder. Each rung is a slightly busier road, and you only step up when the one you are on feels comfortable. In Wheatley the ladder usually looks something like this:
Some learners climb quickly, others stay on one rung for several lessons. Both are completely normal.
Timing helps as well. Beckett Road and Thorne Road tend to be calmer outside the school run, so early lessons on those roads can be planned for the middle of the day if that suits you.
The first session is usually more conversation than driving. Your instructor will ask what worries you, whether that is stalling or other drivers, or something that happened in the past. You can sit in the driving seat with the engine off for as long as you like before you move the car at all.
When you do drive, it will be on a quiet street near home, at a slow speed, with dual controls so your instructor can help if needed. Many nervous learners find that first short drive far less frightening than they expected.
Between lessons, some learners like to sit in the passenger seat on familiar journeys, such as a trip along Thorne Road into town, and notice what other drivers are doing. Watching how cars behave at junctions and roundabouts, without having to drive, can make the real thing feel more predictable when your turn comes.
Feeling at ease with the person beside you matters enormously. If you would prefer a woman, Loredana, one of Alma's co-founders, is especially good with nervous learners and those who have lost confidence. Have a look at our female driving instructors.
If you would rather have a man, FoFo (Alexandru Fonoage) works well with nervous learners, and Sergiu is known for explaining why a mistake happened without ever shouting. Find out more about our male driving instructors.
Our main nervous driver lessons page explains more about our approach. If you live nearer town, our nervous driver lessons in Doncaster town centre use the streets off Thorne Road closer to the centre. You can also read about learning locally on driving lessons in Wheatley.

Many people with anxiety learn to drive successfully. Tell your instructor what helps you, and we will go at whatever pace feels manageable. If you need to stop, we will find a safe place to pull over and take a break.
Only when you are ready. Wheatley Hall Road is a dual carriageway, and we will not take you onto it until you are confident on quieter roads such as Beckett Road and Thorne Road. You always have a say in the next step.
We aim to keep you with the same instructor, because building trust is a big part of overcoming nerves. If you would like a female or male instructor, just ask when you book.
Mistakes are part of learning. Your instructor will calmly help you understand what happened and why, without any criticism. The dual controls mean they can step in if needed.
