Beginner driving lessons in Tickhill

If you have never driven before, beginner driving lessons in Tickhill start gently. Your first drives happen on quiet estate streets near Common Lane, and the busier Market Place waits until you have the basics. Your instructor explains everything in plain language and goes at your pace.

Things to sort out first

  • Provisional licence. Apply from 15 years and 9 months on gov.uk. Most people can drive from 17, or from 16 if they get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component.
  • Eyesight. You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres. Bring glasses or contact lenses if you need them.
  • Footwear. Thin-soled, comfortable shoes help you feel the pedals.
  • Theory revision. You can start now, so the theory test is out of the way well before you are ready for the practical.

Where your first lesson happens

We start where traffic is light and there is room to stop. In Tickhill that usually means the estate streets off Alderson Drive and Common Lane, such as Wheatfield Drive and Rye Croft. These roads are residential and fairly level, well away from the through traffic on the A60 and A631.

Some learners prefer a first session with no traffic at all. If that sounds like you, say so when you book and your instructor will look for a quiet car park nearby to begin, moving onto the estate roads once you feel settled at the wheel.

Tickhill Estfeld Primary School is on Common Lane, so your instructor will avoid the start and end of the school day for early lessons. Later on, that same school traffic becomes useful practice.

The cockpit drill and your first moves

Before the engine starts, your instructor takes you through the cockpit drill. You check the doors are shut, set the seat so you can press the pedals fully, adjust the head restraint and fasten your seat belt. Then you set the mirrors so you can see behind you without moving your head much.

Moving off comes next. You prepare the car, look all around, including over your right shoulder for the blind spot, and then pull away gently. Stopping is the reverse: mirrors, a signal if anyone would benefit, and a smooth, controlled stop parallel to the kerb. You will repeat both many times in the first lesson.

What comes after the first few lessons

Once moving off and stopping feel easy, you learn to turn into and out of side roads, first on the estate and then onto Common Lane and Doncaster Road, which carry the 22 bus. After that comes the town centre, with the bend by St Mary's Church and the T-junction at the Market Place.

Country driving on Stripe Road and your first roundabouts, usually on the way towards Doncaster or Rossington, follow as your confidence grows. Manoeuvres such as bay parking come once your control is steady. Our beginner driving lessons page explains the full course.

Your theory test from Tickhill

The theory test has two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions, where you need 43 to pass, and hazard perception with 14 video clips, where you need 44 out of 75. You must pass it before you can book your practical test, and a pass is valid for two years. Book on gov.uk.

The Doncaster theory test centre is at Fraser House on Netherhall Road. From Tickhill the 22 bus runs to Doncaster Frenchgate Interchange. Read how to pass your theory test first time for revision tips. Friends near the railway in Rossington can book beginner driving lessons in Rossington, and the Tickhill driving lessons page has more about the area.

Beginner driving lessons in Tickhill: your questions

How old do I need to be to start lessons in Tickhill?

You can drive on the road from 17 with a provisional licence, which you can apply for from 15 years and 9 months. If you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, you can start at 16.

Should a beginner learn in a manual or an automatic?

Both are fine. A manual licence covers both kinds of car, while an automatic is usually quicker to learn. Our manual or automatic guide can help you decide if you are unsure, and your instructor is happy to talk it through in your first lesson.

Do I need to pass my theory test before my first lesson?

No. You can start lessons as soon as you have your provisional licence. You only need the theory pass before you book the practical test, so many learners revise for it alongside their first few months of lessons.

Can you collect me from work for my first lesson?

Yes, as long as you have your provisional licence with you. We can pick you up from home or from a workplace in Tickhill or Doncaster. Give us the address when you book on 07402 034084 and your instructor will meet you there.
