Driving lessons in Tickhill

Alma Driving School offers driving lessons in Tickhill with DVSA approved instructors in dual controlled manual and automatic cars. We collect you from home or work anywhere in the town, then use the quieter estates and the old town centre before moving on to the A60 towards Doncaster.

Tickhill, DN11: a market town south of Doncaster

Tickhill is a market town in the DN11 postcode district, about eight miles south of Doncaster and close to the Nottinghamshire border. It sits between Maltby and Harworth, at the point where the A631 from Maltby to Bawtry crosses the A60 from Doncaster to Worksop. The A1(M) passes just to the east of the town centre, and the River Torne runs along its south-eastern edge.

For a learner, the town packs a lot into a small space. The old centre holds St Mary's Church, the Buttercross built in the Market Place in 1777 and the remains of Tickhill Castle, whose Norman gatehouse still stands. Around it are newer estates such as the streets off Alderson Drive and Common Lane, and beyond those, open country roads out towards Wadworth and Hesley.

We pick up from home or work. Handy meeting points include the Market Place and the streets near Tickhill Estfeld Primary School on Common Lane, and we can also collect you from a workplace in Doncaster at the end of a shift.

Driving through the old town centre

Tickhill's centre teaches skills that newer places rarely do. Coming in from Maltby on Rotherham Road, the A631 becomes West Gate, passes the turning for the castle and then bends sharply left by St Mary's Church before running along Castlegate. At the Market Place it reaches a T-junction, where the A60 carries straight on as North Gate and the A631 turns sharp right into Sunderland Street.

That short stretch gives you a tight bend to read and a T-junction in the middle of town, with traffic arriving from several directions around the Buttercross. Add pedestrians around the Market Place and buses on the 22 and X11 routes, and you have a slow-speed workout in observation and judgement that pays off everywhere else you drive.

From the estates to the A60: how Tickhill lessons progress

  1. Estate streets. Roads off Alderson Drive, such as Airedale Avenue and Beech Avenue, are where you practise moving off and stopping, then your first junctions.
  2. Common Lane and Doncaster Road. Busier roads with the 22 bus and school traffic near Estfeld Primary, good for meeting oncoming vehicles and emerging with care.
  3. The town centre loop. West Gate, Castlegate, the Market Place and Sunderland Street, taken slowly and with plenty of observation.
  4. Country roads. Stripe Road through Hesley towards Rossington, and Worksop Road heading south. Speeds rise out here and bends need reading well in advance.
  5. The road to Doncaster. The A60 north through Wadworth and across the M18, then Tickhill Road through Loversall into Balby and on towards the city.

Getting to Doncaster driving test centre from Tickhill

The Doncaster practical test centre is at Unit 10 and 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL. It lies on the Armthorpe side of the city, about three miles from the centre. With Tickhill around eight miles south of Doncaster, that makes it one of the longer drives to the test centre from any area we cover.

The direct way follows the A60 through Wadworth, then Tickhill Road through Loversall into Balby, before you cross the city to the north-east side. The other option is Stripe Road to Rossington, then Great Yorkshire Way up to Junction 3 of the M18 and White Rose Way. Either way you meet plenty of dual carriageway and roundabouts before you get anywhere near the test centre.

DVSA does not publish test routes. We prepare you on roads like the ones you will meet on test instead, and our guide to what to expect on a Doncaster driving test explains how the day runs.

Lesson types in Tickhill

Male and female instructors

You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor when you book. Diana teaches in automatic cars only and is good at fitting lessons around busy family timetables, which helps parents juggling the school run. Nick puts a lot of weight on hazard awareness and on understanding why things happen, a useful approach on country roads where you have to read the road far ahead.

Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). All our cars are dual controlled and fully insured.

Questions from Tickhill learners

Do you pick up from anywhere in Tickhill?

Yes. We pick up across the town, from the older streets near the Market Place and St Mary's Church to the estates off Common Lane and Wong Lane. If you live beyond Wadworth, our driving lessons in Edlington page covers that side, and driving lessons in Rossington covers the villages to the north-east.

How far is Tickhill from the Doncaster driving test centre?

Tickhill is about eight miles south of Doncaster, and the test centre is roughly three miles out on the Armthorpe side, so it is a fair drive. We use that to your advantage by practising the A60 and the city roads on the way, so the drive on test day feels familiar.

Can I have motorway lessons from Tickhill?

Yes. The M18 crosses the A60 near Wadworth, only a few miles north of the town. Since June 2018 learners can drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car. See motorway lessons and Pass Plus for details.

Is the town centre hard to drive through?

It takes care, because the sharp bend by St Mary's Church and the Market Place T-junction come close together. We build up to it gradually, starting on the estates, so by the time you drive the centre you already have good clutch or brake control and steady observation.

How do I book driving lessons in Tickhill?

Call 07402 034084 or send a WhatsApp message. Let us know where in Tickhill you live and whether you would like a manual or automatic car, plus any preference for a male or female instructor. Prices and packages are on our prices page.
