Alma Driving School teaches learners all over Edlington, from the colliery-era avenues of New Edlington to the older lanes around St Peter's Church in Old Edlington. We pick you up at home, college, school or work, and we start on the streets you know before widening out towards Doncaster.
Edlington sits south-west of Doncaster and Warmsworth in the DN12 postcode district. Locals call it Edlo. The town has two halves. Old Edlington is the original village with its 12th-century church, and New Edlington to the north was built between 1909 and the early 1920s to house miners at Yorkshire Main Colliery. The pit closed in 1985, but the street pattern it created still shapes how you learn to drive here.
New Edlington's avenues were laid out long before most households owned a car, so kerbside parking is a normal part of driving on roads such as Clark Avenue and Granby Road. Judging gaps and holding back for oncoming traffic quickly become everyday skills. That makes Edlington an honest place to learn, because the habits you build here carry straight over to busier parts of Doncaster.
Heading the other way, the B6376 carries on south-west from Edlington towards Braithwell and Maltby. As the houses give way to open country, it is a good place to practise reading speed limit signs and adjusting your speed smoothly.
We collect from your door anywhere in DN12. That includes Old Edlington and the Warmsworth Halt end of Edlington Lane. Other easy meeting points include the Co-op on Edlington Lane and the bus stops at the Main Avenue junction. Both the 314 and the 315 to Doncaster call there.
Students at Sir Thomas Wharton Academy on Tait Avenue, which teaches ages 11 to 18, can be picked up once the school day is over. Parents often fit a lesson around the drop-off at Hill Top Academy or Edlington Victoria Academy on Victoria Road. St Mary's Catholic Primary School on Bungalow Road is another familiar landmark for local families.
The practical test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster. From Edlington that is a cross-city drive. It normally runs north on Edlington Lane to Warmsworth, then along the A630 through Balby towards the centre and beyond. Another way round is the A1(M) from Junction 36 to the M18, leaving at Junction 4, which is roughly three miles from the test centre.
We build that drive into your later lessons. The roads around the test centre feel very different from Edlington's avenues, so we spend time on roads like the ones you will meet there before your test date. Your theory test is in town at Fraser House on Netherhall Road.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). Our dual controlled cars are fully insured, and we have both manual and automatic cars. You can ask for a man or a woman when you book. Read about our female instructors and male instructors to see who might suit you.

Yes. We pick up across the whole of Edlington, including Old Edlington to the south and the Warmsworth Halt end of Edlington Lane to the north. If it is easier, we can also collect you from work or college in Doncaster or Balby.
The test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster. Most drives go via Warmsworth and the A630 through Balby. The A1(M) and the M18 to Junction 4 is another option. We practise the drive before your test so it feels routine.
It suits learners well. The older avenues of New Edlington teach you to deal with parked cars and tight junctions, and Edlington Lane gives you a steady main road. Doncaster town centre and the A1(M) are both within easy reach for later lessons.
You need a provisional driving licence, which you can apply for on GOV.UK. Bring it to your first lesson along with any glasses you need for driving. Our guide to passing your theory test first time is worth reading early on, and what to expect at the Doncaster driving test helps later.
