Learning in a manual car gives you a licence for both manual and automatic cars. In Edlington, where the older avenues have cars parked along the kerb and junctions come thick and fast, you get plenty of the slow-speed clutch work that turns a nervous stall into smooth control.
New Edlington was built for a colliery workforce more than a century ago, long before every house had a car outside. Driving along Granby Road or Bernard Road, you will often need to slow right down or stop to let an oncoming car through a gap between parked vehicles. In a manual car that means crawling at the biting point with your foot covering the brake, then moving off again without stalling.
It can feel fiddly at first. After a few lessons of creeping forward with gentle clutch control, though, most learners find it becomes second nature. The same skill pays off everywhere, from supermarket car parks to queues at traffic lights in Balby.
Edlington Lane, the B6376, is where you begin to use more of the gearbox. Starting near the Co-op, you will move up through the gears between the side turnings, then plan your change down well before junctions such as Main Avenue or Staveley Street. Buses on the 314 and 315 routes stop along it, so you learn to read when one is about to pull out.
Heading north towards Warmsworth Halt and the junction with Sheffield Road, the traffic builds. We practise selecting the right gear for each speed and keeping the car smooth, with both hands on the wheel as much as possible. A common early habit is looking down at the gear lever, and Edlington Lane is a good place to break it.
Every manual learner has to be able to move off uphill without rolling back. We pick a suitable slope for your stage, and when you are ready for something steeper we head through Warmsworth towards the Don Gorge, where Boat Lane climbs up into Sprotbrough.
You hold the car on the parking brake and raise the clutch to the biting point with a little extra gas. After checking your mirrors and blind spot, you release the brake as the car pulls against it. We also practise angle starts from behind parked cars, which you will need constantly in New Edlington.
Once you can link gears and steering, we take you out of town. Broomhouse Lane heads east into Balby, where you meet more junctions and heavier traffic. The A630 links Warmsworth with Balby and Doncaster. It brings lane choices and roundabouts to deal with. A manual car asks you to plan your gear for each one in advance, so we practise the order of mirrors, position, speed and gear on the approach.
Later we practise the reversing exercises used on test. You will learn the parallel park and the bay park. Pulling up on the right and reversing about two car lengths comes next. Each one uses the same slow clutch control you learned on the avenues. When you are close to test standard, a mock driving test in Edlington shows how ready you are.

The older avenues in New Edlington mean a lot of slow-speed work, which can feel tricky at first. Many learners find it helps in the long run, because they get plenty of practice at clutch control before they ever reach busier roads.
We find a slope that suits your stage close to home, and for steeper practice we sometimes head through Warmsworth towards the Don Gorge and Boat Lane in Sprotbrough. You will be confident moving off on a hill well before your test.
Yes. We teach in dual controlled manual cars and you can take your test in the same car you learned in. A manual pass lets you drive both manual and automatic cars.
