Motability Scheme lessons in Edlington

Alma welcomes disabled learners and Motability Scheme customers from across Edlington. All of these lessons use automatic cars with dual controls, and we collect you from your door, anywhere from Old Edlington up to the Warmsworth Halt end of Edlington Lane.

Our approach

Without a clutch pedal to operate, an automatic car asks less of your body and leaves more attention for the road. Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). They plan lessons around your energy levels and any other needs.

We are happy to start with shorter sessions if long lessons are tiring, and to build in breaks. If you use a wheelchair or a walking aid, tell us how you prefer to get in and out of the car, and we will make sure the pick-up spot gives you the space you need.

Please let us know about any adaptations when you get in touch on 07402 034084. Knowing in advance helps us decide whether our cars will suit you, or whether it would be wise to arrange an assessment before your first lesson.

Driving at 16 with PIP

The usual minimum age for driving a car is 17. People who are awarded the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or who are waiting on a claim for it, can start a year earlier at 16. The provisional licence can be applied for from 15 years and 9 months through GOV.UK.

For a young person in Edlington, that extra year can open up college courses and jobs that are hard to reach on the 314 or 315 bus.

Motability Foundation driving lessons grants

The Motability Foundation can award a grant covering up to 40 hours of driving lessons. To qualify you must be on the Motability Scheme and have already passed your theory test, and there are further conditions. These include receiving a means-tested benefit.

The Foundation makes its own arrangements for grant-funded lessons, so the first step is to check if you are eligible. Call the Foundation on 0800 500 3186, or read the details on the Motability Foundation website. If you do not qualify, or would like to start sooner, you are welcome to learn with Alma as a private pupil.

Assessments with Driving Mobility

Driving Mobility is a charity that carries out car driving and adaptation assessments. It runs an outreach centre in Doncaster, with bookings handled through its centre in Leeds. An assessment can recommend specific controls or equipment, and can flag anything to think about before you begin lessons.

Find out more on the Driving Mobility website. If you are unsure whether you need an assessment, tell us about your situation when you call and we will talk it through.

Pick-up and routes in Edlington

We pick up from your home anywhere in DN12. If somewhere else is easier, the Co-op on Edlington Lane is a central meeting point with space to pull in. Early lessons stay on quieter roads such as those around Howbeck Drive, where you can get used to the car without other traffic around you.

Many people start with a clear goal in mind. It might be driving to college in Doncaster or to a job in Balby, or getting to Martinwells Lake without relying on anyone else. Telling us the goal early helps us plan lessons that lead straight towards it.

As your confidence grows, we move onto Edlington Lane and the avenues of New Edlington, then out through Warmsworth or Balby towards Doncaster. Motability Scheme driving lessons in Edlington: your questions

Can I use a Motability Foundation grant with Alma?

Grant-funded lessons are arranged by the Motability Foundation itself, so contact the Foundation first on 0800 500 3186 to check eligibility. If you are not eligible, or want to start straight away, you can book with Alma as a private pupil.

Are your Motability lessons in automatic cars?

Yes. All of our Motability lessons are in automatic, dual controlled cars. If you need adaptations, mention them when you call so we can talk about what is possible.

Where can I get a driving assessment near Edlington?

Driving Mobility runs a Doncaster outreach centre for car driving and adaptation assessments, booked through its Leeds centre. Visit the Driving Mobility website or ask us when you call.

Can family members help me practise between lessons?

Private practice can help once your instructor feels you are ready, provided the supervising driver meets the legal requirements and the car is insured for you. If your own car has adaptations, ask your instructor how best to use it alongside your lessons.
