Motability Scheme lessons in Conisbrough

Disabled learners and people on the Motability Scheme can learn with Alma in Conisbrough. Every car we use for these lessons is an automatic with dual controls, and your instructor collects you from home so each lesson begins somewhere you feel settled.

Telling us what you need

The most helpful thing you can do before the first lesson is mention any adaptation needs when you ring us. It lets your instructor plan the basics in advance, such as how you will get into the driving seat comfortably and how long a session should run before a rest.

An automatic gearbox takes the clutch pedal and the gear lever out of the job of driving. That frees you to concentrate on steering and on reading the traffic around you. It also helps on the slopes in this part of DN12, where a hill start in an automatic comes down to moving your foot smoothly from the brake to the accelerator.

Where we can collect you

Home is the usual pick-up point, since it saves you any extra travel. When another place suits you better, Conisbrough station is worth knowing about. It is on Station Road, close to where Station Road meets Doncaster Road, and Northern lists ramped step-free access to both platforms plus a set-down point for passengers with reduced mobility.

Some pupils prefer to start from work or college so a lesson fits round the rest of their day. Give us the address and we will check there is a safe, level place to get in and out of the car before your first session.

Learning from the age of 16

The normal minimum age for driving a car is 17. That drops to 16 if you receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP) with its mobility component paid at the enhanced rate, or if you have claimed it and are waiting to hear. A provisional licence is still needed before your first lesson, and you can apply for one from 15 years and 9 months on GOV.UK.

Funding through the Motability Foundation

Some learners can have their tuition paid for. The Motability Foundation offers a driving lessons grant worth as many as 40 hours, open to disabled people on the Motability Scheme who also satisfy extra conditions. One is receiving a means-tested benefit, and another is having your theory test pass already in hand.

Grant-funded lessons are organised by the Foundation itself, so contact them before anything else. Their number is 0800 500 3186, and the full rules are on the Foundation's driving lessons grant page.

Not eligible, or keen to get going without waiting on a grant decision? You are welcome to book with Alma as a private pupil, and our prices page lists the current rates.

Assessments for controls and adaptations

Some people are unsure which adaptations would help them, such as hand controls or a steering aid. A specialist assessment answers that question. The charity Driving Mobility carries out car driving and adaptation assessments at an outreach site in Doncaster, booked via its centre in Leeds. Having one early can save time, because your lessons can then be planned around the right set-up from the start.

When the time comes to book your practical test, you can tell DVSA about a disability or health condition so it can make suitable arrangements. The GOV.UK driving test pages explain how.

Lessons on Conisbrough roads

We start on the residential groves in DN12 2, where there is space to stop, then move on to the bus routes along Micklebring Grove and Maple Grove. Once you are steady, lessons take in Church Street and the A6023 Low Road beside the river. In time you will also drive the A630 towards Warmsworth and Doncaster, getting used to the busier roads you will meet on test.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Conisbrough: your questions

Does Alma provide lessons paid for by the Motability Foundation grant?

No. Grant-funded tuition is arranged directly by the Motability Foundation, so speak to them first on 0800 500 3186 to find out whether you qualify. Anyone who does not qualify, or who would like to start straight away, can book lessons with us privately.

What kind of car will I learn in?

An automatic car with dual controls. Automatics suit many disabled learners because there is no clutch or gear lever to manage. Let us know about any adaptation needs when you first call, and we will talk through how we can help.

Can I begin lessons at 16?

Yes, if you receive the enhanced mobility rate of PIP or have applied for it. Without that, the usual starting age for driving a car is 17. Either way, you need your provisional licence in place before the first lesson.

Who can assess what adaptations I need?

The charity Driving Mobility carries out car driving and adaptation assessments. Its Doncaster outreach site is booked through the Leeds centre. An assessment is a good idea if you are unsure which controls will suit you, and it can be done before or early in your lessons.
