Disabled learners and people on the Motability Scheme can learn with Alma anywhere in Mexborough, in dual controlled automatic cars. Mention any adaptations you might need on the phone, along with anything that limits how long you can drive comfortably, and we will plan lessons around it.
Most pupils are picked up from home. If another place works better, Montagu Hospital on Adwick Road has on-site parking with Blue Badge spaces near the main entrances. A free shuttle bus also runs between Montagu and Doncaster Royal Infirmary, which can help if you have appointments at both.
Mexborough station has step-free access to both platforms, so you could travel in by train from Doncaster or Sheffield. The booking office is only staffed for part of the day, so tell us if you would like your instructor to meet you at a particular spot.
Lessons use automatic, dual controlled cars, which removes the need for a clutch and gear changes. If you think you might need adaptations, mention them on the phone and we will say straight away whether we can help.
If you are not sure what you need, Driving Mobility, a charity, carries out car driving and adaptation assessments. Its Doncaster outreach centre is arranged through its Leeds centre, and you can find out more at drivingmobility.org.uk.
A few details help us plan the right lessons from day one:
Everything you share stays between you and your instructor, and it simply means the first lesson can start on the right foot. If anything changes along the way, just let us know so we can adjust.
The usual minimum age for driving a car is 17, with provisional licence applications open from 15 years and 9 months. If you receive the mobility component of PIP at the enhanced rate, or you have applied for it, you can start driving a car at 16. Apply on GOV.UK and declare any condition that affects your driving.
The Motability Foundation can fund up to 40 hours of driving lessons. To qualify you need to:
The Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons itself, so contact it first on 0800 500 3186 or through its driving lessons grant page. If you are not eligible, or would rather start sooner, you can book with Alma as a private pupil. See our prices.
Early lessons use quiet streets such as Sandown Road and Uttoxeter Avenue off Harlington Road, where you can get used to the car without pressure. Later you move on to Adwick Road and the town centre, then the steady speeds of Greens Way.
We build in breaks whenever you need them and can keep sessions shorter if fatigue or pain is a factor. More on how we work is on our Motability driving lessons page. Learners a short drive away can read about Motability lessons in Conisbrough, and the Mexborough driving lessons page covers every other lesson type.
We'll ring you back within the day. If it's urgent, call 07402 034084.
Leave your name and number and we'll ring you back within the day to talk through lessons in Mexborough and the times that suit you.
Not directly. The Motability Foundation arranges its grant-funded lessons itself, so speak to the Foundation first on 0800 500 3186 to check eligibility. If you do not qualify, or you want to begin sooner, you can learn with Alma as a private pupil in an automatic, dual controlled car.
Yes. Montagu Hospital on Adwick Road has on-site parking and Blue Badge spaces near the main entrances, so it works well as a pick-up point. Let us know roughly when your appointment should finish and we will arrange the lesson around it.
Only if you are unsure what adaptations or controls you need. Driving Mobility, which books Doncaster outreach appointments through its Leeds centre, can carry out a car driving assessment. If an automatic car suits you as it is, you can start lessons with us straight away.
For a private lesson with Alma you can start before the theory test, as long as you hold a provisional licence. The Motability Foundation grant is different, because it is only available to people who have already passed their theory test, so if you hope to use the grant, it is worth booking the theory early.
