Mexborough's traffic is stop-start much of the day, with buses on Adwick Road and Wath Road and a busy one-way loop round the centre. An automatic takes the clutch out of all of that, leaving you free to concentrate on what is happening around you.
In a town where you are often crawling behind a bus or waiting to turn, two pedals make life easier. There is no stalling and no clutch control to think about, so beginners usually feel at home sooner.
Many learners also need fewer hours to reach test standard in an automatic. The trade-off is an automatic-only licence. See our main automatic driving lessons page for how the licence works. Our manual or automatic guide gives a side-by-side comparison.
Release the footbrake in an automatic and the car creeps forward on its own. Learning to manage that creep is your first task, and the quieter roads of Windhill, such as Clayfield View and Coniston Road, are a good place to do it.
Creep becomes your best friend in slow traffic and when reversing. Every reversing exercise on the test, from bay parking to pulling up on the right, is controlled with gentle pressure on the brake, which most learners find easier than balancing a clutch.
Adwick Road is one of the busiest roads in town for a learner. The 221 between Rotherham and Doncaster runs along it, and Montagu Hospital brings a steady flow of people in and out of its car park. Wath Road carries the X20 between Barnsley and Doncaster.
Around The Laurel Academy on Maple Road the start and end of the school day bring parked cars and pupils crossing. In an automatic you can keep your speed down with the brake covered and your eyes on the pavements, instead of worrying about which gear you are in.
Greens Way gives you dual carriageway experience close to home. Pressing firmly on the accelerator brings kickdown, a quick change to a lower gear for extra power, which helps when you join from a slip road or need to build speed safely.
Later lessons take the A630 from Conisbrough through Warmsworth towards Balby and the east side of Doncaster. Diana, who teaches automatic only, and Alecsandru, a former college teacher who also teaches automatic, are two of the instructors you might learn with.
West of the town the A6023 carries on as Manvers Way through the business park towards Wath-upon-Dearne. It follows the line of old railways that once served the Manvers coal and coke works, so it is a fairly direct road with business park junctions along it.
It makes a good automatic lesson because you practise holding a steady speed, checking mirrors before each junction and planning lane position well ahead. It is also the way to Dearne Valley College at Manvers Park, so students can turn the drive to college into useful practice.
If you know you will only drive your own automatic car, an automatic licence is usually fine. If work might ask you to drive a manual van, think carefully, because you would need to pass another test. Learners just along the road weigh up the same thing; see automatic driving lessons in Conisbrough or automatic lessons in Sprotbrough.
Our driving lessons in Mexborough page covers pick-up points and lesson types across the town, and Motability lessons in Mexborough also use automatic cars.

Automatic and manual lessons are priced separately, and you can see both on our prices page. Since many people reach test standard in fewer hours in an automatic, the overall spend often evens out. Ask your instructor for a realistic estimate after a couple of lessons.
Yes. Diana teaches automatic only and fits lessons around busy family timetables, and you can ask for a female driving instructor when you book. Tell us whether you want manual or automatic at the same time, so we can match you with the right instructor and car.
No. The practical test at the Doncaster centre follows the same format whichever car you use, with the same marking, the same independent driving section and the same reversing exercises. The only difference is that your full licence will cover automatic cars only.
Yes. We can pick you up from Dearne Valley College at Manvers Park after classes and drop you home in Mexborough, or start from home and finish at college. The drive between the two along the A6023 makes a useful part of the lesson.
