Automatic driving lessons in Conisbrough

An automatic car takes the clutch out of the picture, and in a town as hilly as Conisbrough that makes a real difference. You can put your attention on observation and positioning, and on judging traffic, while the gearbox looks after itself.

Why automatics suit Conisbrough

Two things make an automatic attractive here. First, the slopes. Streets running up from Low Road towards the castle, and names like New Hill and Beech Hill, mean plenty of uphill junctions. In an automatic you hold the car on the footbrake and move away when it is safe, with no risk of stalling halfway through.

Second, the stop-start traffic. Buses including the 221 and the X3 run through the town, with stops along Church Street and Doncaster Road, and at school times the roads around De Warenne Academy on Gardens Lane fill up with parents. Creeping forward in a queue and stopping again is much simpler without a clutch, which leaves you free to watch for children stepping out between parked cars.

Creep control and the parking brake

The first skill in an automatic is understanding creep. When you take your foot off the brake in drive, the car rolls forward gently on its own. On the level that creep is your friend for slow manoeuvres such as bay parking. On a slope it can be too much or too little, so you learn to control the car with small, smooth movements on the brake pedal.

Your instructor will also show you when to use the parking brake. Waiting at lights on a hill, or stopping behind a bus on Church Street for more than a moment, is a good time to apply it and rest your foot. Knowing when to select drive or park is the kind of thing a show me tell me question can touch on, so you will learn the reasons as well as the actions.

From the groves to the A630

Early lessons stay on residential roads in DN12 2, where you can practise steering and stopping at the kerb before you try turning into side roads. Once you are comfortable we move on to Micklebring Grove and Maple Grove, which are bus routes, and then to Old Road and the town centre streets.

Later you will drive the A630 in both directions, on Sheffield Road heading west and Doncaster Road heading east, before trying the B6094 over Clifton Hill and Carr Lane. In an automatic you tend to reach these main roads sooner, because there is less to coordinate with your feet. Many learners also find they need fewer hours in total.

The automatic-only licence

Pass in an automatic and your licence covers automatic cars only. For most people that is no problem. Automatic and electric cars are increasingly common on Doncaster's roads. If you might need to drive a manual for work, talk it through with us first or read our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence.

Our automatic instructors include Diana, a calm instructor who is good at fitting lessons around busy family timetables, and Alecsandru, a former college teacher who teaches in automatic cars. Automatic driving lessons in Conisbrough: your questions

Are automatic lessons easier on Conisbrough's hills?

For most people, yes. Without a clutch you cannot stall or roll back on a hill start in the usual way. You still need good brake control, and your instructor will teach you how to hold the car steady on slopes such as Beech Hill before moving away.

Do automatic learners need fewer lessons?

Often, because there is less to master with your feet. The amount varies from person to person. Your instructor will give you a fair estimate once they have seen you drive a few times.

Can I take my test in an automatic and then drive a manual?

No. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence. To drive a manual car later you would need to pass a test in a manual car.

Is there a wait for automatic lessons in Conisbrough?

Demand for automatic cars is high, so availability can vary. Call or WhatsApp 07402 034084 with your free times and we will tell you honestly when an automatic instructor can start with you.
