Never sat in the driver's seat before? That is exactly where most of our Conisbrough pupils start. Your first lesson takes place on quiet streets close to home, at a pace that suits you, with an instructor who has dual controls if anything needs a helping hand.
You need a provisional driving licence before you can drive on the road. You can apply from 15 years and 9 months old on GOV.UK and start driving at 17. Bring the photocard to your first lesson, along with any glasses or contact lenses you need, because your instructor will check you can read a number plate from 20 metres.
It is worth starting your theory revision alongside your first few lessons. You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical test, and studying the Highway Code at the same time as driving helps both make sense. Our guide to passing your theory test first time explains the 50 questions and the hazard perception clips.
We pick you up from home and drive to a quiet residential road nearby. For many pupils that means one of the groves in DN12 2, such as Pine Grove or Hawthorn Grove, which sit just off the bus routes and have room to pull in. Others begin near Ivanhoe Road, where the street names come from Walter Scott's novel, which used Conisbrough Castle as a setting.
We deliberately avoid the busier roads at first. Church Street and Low Road can wait, and so can the A630, until you have the basics. Living near the castle? Then we might start around Calvert Way and the roads below Castle Hill instead, picking a time of day when they are quiet.
If that goes well, you may finish the hour with a few left turns into side roads. Nobody expects perfection. The aim is to leave feeling you have actually driven, and that you want to come back.
Over the next few weeks you will build up the core skills one at a time. Turning right across traffic comes next, along with meeting oncoming cars where vehicles are parked on both sides of the road. Because Conisbrough is hilly, you will soon add hill starts on roads like Windgate Hill or Burcroft Hill, which is great preparation for any test.
Once you are confident, lessons move on to the bus routes along Micklebring Grove and Maple Grove, then to Old Road and Church Street before you finally try the A630. Your instructor keeps a record of your progress so you can see how far you have come. You can read more about beginner driving lessons in general on our main lesson page.
Both are fine for a first-timer. A manual licence covers both types of car, while an automatic is quicker to pick up and very handy on the slopes here. Have a look at manual driving lessons in Conisbrough or automatic lessons in Conisbrough to compare.
If you live just over the boundary, we teach first-timers the same way on the streets of Edlington and Denaby Main. All of it sits within our Conisbrough driving lessons area.

Not at all. Most beginners have never touched the controls before. Your instructor starts on a quiet street, explains everything before the car moves and has dual controls in case they need to step in.
You can book it as soon as you have your provisional licence. Many learners take it once road signs and hazards make more sense after a month or two of lessons. You must pass it before booking your practical test. Book on GOV.UK.
Lessons are usually booked in blocks of an hour and a half or two hours, which gives you time to reach a quiet road and still have a good stretch of practice before heading home. Check current lengths and packages on our prices page.
Yes, as long as they meet the legal rules for supervising a learner and you are insured on their car. Private practice on the same Conisbrough roads you use in lessons helps a lot. Ask your instructor what to focus on.
