Alma Driving School teaches learner drivers all over Conisbrough, from the streets below the castle to the groves off Micklebring Grove. Your instructor collects you from home or work and builds your driving from quiet DN12 side streets up to the busy roads you will need before your Doncaster test.
Conisbrough stands above the River Don roughly four and a half miles south-west of Doncaster, on the old main road between Doncaster and Rotherham. Homes here carry DN12 2 and DN12 3 postcodes. Denaby Main (DN12 4) runs straight on to the west, and Edlington (DN12 1) is reached over the B6094.
Two A-roads meet in the town. The A630 carries Sheffield Road and Doncaster Road through Conisbrough, while the A6023 Low Road follows the valley floor past the castle before heading off towards Denaby Main and Mexborough. Low Road sits low enough beside the Don to have been closed by floods, while the castle stands on a limestone spur well above the river.
That change in height is useful to a learner. Streets with names like Windgate Hill, Burcroft Hill, Minneymoor Hill and Old Hill give you proper slopes to practise on, and you are never more than a few minutes from a main road with buses and traffic lights.
We usually begin on the residential groves in DN12 2, such as Pine Grove and Hawthorn Grove, where you can get used to the controls and practise moving off and pulling up at the kerb without a queue behind you. Buses use Micklebring Grove and Maple Grove, so once you are steady those two roads become the first place you learn to wait patiently behind a stopped bus and pass it safely.
Next come the slopes. A hill start on Windgate Hill or Burcroft Hill teaches clutch control or brake control far faster than any flat car park. Around Church Street and West Street you practise emerging from side roads where parked cars hide the view, and you start reading pedestrians near the shops and bus stops.
Later lessons take the A630 Doncaster Road through the Conisbrough crossroads and on to the one at Warmsworth, and the B6094 along Clifton Hill and Carr Lane towards Edlington. Low Road takes you west to the Bambury Bridge roundabout on the A6023. From Warmsworth it is a short step to junction 36 of the A1(M) and on into Balby, where the wider roads of Doncaster begin.
Most pupils are picked up from home, but you can be collected anywhere convenient in town. Popular choices include:
Being picked up close to home matters here because the first ten minutes of every lesson can be spent on the streets you will drive every day once you pass.
The practical test centre is at Unit 10 and 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL. It sits on the Armthorpe side of the city, about three miles out from the centre, which puts it on the far side of Doncaster from Conisbrough.
The natural way there follows the A630 east along Doncaster Road to Warmsworth, through the A1(M) junction 36 interchange, then on through Balby and across the city. That drive is often where Conisbrough learners first meet several lanes of traffic at lights, so we cover it well before test day and you arrive knowing the area rather than seeing it for the first time.
Your theory test is taken at Fraser House on Netherhall Road (DN1 2PW). Read our guide to what to expect at the Doncaster driving test before you book.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car is dual controlled and fully insured. We have both manual and automatic cars. You can also choose between male and female instructors. If you would feel more comfortable with a woman teaching you, ask for one of our female driving instructors, or choose from our male driving instructors.
Prices and block booking packages are on our prices page, and our guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster explains what affects the cost. You can read what past pupils say on our reviews page. Not sure which gearbox to choose? Our manual or automatic licence guide sets out the difference, and our tips on how to pass your theory test first time will help you get that step done early.

Yes. Alma picks up across the whole DN12 area, so learners in Denaby Main and Edlington are covered as well as Conisbrough. Lessons often cross between them anyway, since the A6023 links Conisbrough to Denaby and the B6094 runs over to Edlington.
Conisbrough is about four and a half miles south-west of Doncaster, and the test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park is roughly three miles beyond the city centre on the Armthorpe side. The usual route follows the A630 through Warmsworth and Balby, so allow for crossing the whole city.
Yes. We have automatic cars and instructors who teach only in automatics. Passing in an automatic gives you an automatic-only licence. Many people find the hills and bus stops around the town centre easier without a clutch to manage.
You can apply for your provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months and start driving at 17. If you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP, you can start at 16. Apply on GOV.UK.
