Alma Driving School gives driving lessons across Denaby Main, the former pit village between Conisbrough and Mexborough. We collect you from your door in DN12 4 and take you from the quiet closes off Harrogate Drive all the way to the busier roads across Doncaster where you will sit your test.
Denaby Main sits on the south side of the River Don, facing Mexborough across the water, with Conisbrough roughly a mile to the east. Its homes share the DN12 4 postcode sector with the much smaller village of Old Denaby, which lies about a kilometre away down Denaby Lane. Conisbrough Castle stands at the Doncaster end of the neighbouring town about four and a half miles from the city.
The village grew up around Denaby Main Colliery, sunk in the 1860s and closed in 1968. The colliery company built long terraces in parallel rows off the main road, and after the pit closed those terraces were cleared and replaced with modern semi-detached homes on a more open layout. Today the village includes Tickhill Street and Rossington Street, while names like Pitman Road and Colliery Road nod to the pit that built it.
Denaby Main is compact, so a single lesson can take in a surprising variety of driving. These are the roads most local pupils get to know well:
Your instructor will usually collect you from home, but other spots work too. Dearne Valley Leisure Centre on Doncaster Road is an easy landmark, since the Doncaster Road and Denaby Lane bus stop is only a short walk away. The Asda on Hill Top Road, near its junction with Pitman Road, is another popular meeting point, and its car park comes in handy for bay parking practice at quiet times.
If you are coming from further afield by train, the nearest station is Conisbrough, on Station Road, where Northern runs hourly services towards Doncaster and Sheffield. Work pick-ups are fine as well, so a lesson can start straight after a shift.
The practical test is taken at Heather Court on Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way (DN2 5YL), on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster. From Denaby that means crossing the whole city. The usual way heads east on the A6023 Doncaster Road into Conisbrough, follows Low Road past the castle to join the A630, and then runs through Warmsworth and the A1(M) junction 36 interchange into Balby.
We drive that route several times before your test, so the busier Doncaster junctions feel familiar by the time you need them. Theory tests are taken at Fraser House on Netherhall Road in the city centre. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains what happens on the day.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). Every car has dual controls and full insurance, and you can learn in a manual or an automatic. Many pupils have a preference about who teaches them, so you can ask for one of our female driving instructors or choose one of our male driving instructors.

Our manual or automatic licence guide helps, and our advice on how to pass the theory test first time is worth reading early.
