Automatic driving lessons in Denaby Main

An automatic lets you learn the road without worrying about the clutch. In Denaby Main, where the main road is lined with bus stops and the school streets fill up twice a day, that extra headroom helps you concentrate on what is happening around you.

Stop-start driving on the A6023

Doncaster Road carries the 221 between Doncaster and Rotherham, along with other local services, and they stop frequently along the village. In a manual, every bus pulling in means a gear change and clutch work. In an automatic you simply ease off and brake gently. When it is safe to pass, you move away with the accelerator.

That leaves more of your attention for the bus itself, giving it room as it pulls out and watching for passengers crossing in front of it.

The school-run streets

Denaby Main has three primary schools close together. Hillside Academy is on Crags Road, Denaby Main Primary Academy is on School Walk and St Alban's Catholic Primary is on Wadworth Street. At the start and end of the school day, the roads around them are busy with parked cars and young children walking to school.

Lessons at these times teach you to crawl past parked cars, anticipate a child stepping out and stop smoothly when you need to. Using creep control at very low speed is much simpler in an automatic, as the car moves slowly on its own and you control it with light touches of the brake.

Parking practice at Asda

The Asda car park on Hill Top Road is a useful place to practise bay parking at quieter times. Your instructor will show you how to use the creep to move the car slowly into position, and which reference points help you judge where the bay lines are. You will also learn to check all around before reversing. Bay parking is one of the reversing exercises you might be asked to do on test.

You will also learn when to select park and apply the parking brake, and why you should keep your foot on the brake while you change from drive to reverse.

Longer drives towards Conisbrough and Doncaster

Once you are confident in the village, lessons follow Doncaster Road east into Conisbrough. Low Road runs beside the river past the castle to the A630, and from there the road carries on through Warmsworth to the A1(M) at junction 36. In an automatic these longer runs are a good time to work on anticipation, reading the traffic far ahead so you can lift off early instead of braking late.

They also bring you closer to the roads around the Doncaster test centre, which sits on the Armthorpe side of the city at Shaw Wood Business Park.

An automatic-only licence

If you pass in an automatic, your licence lets you drive automatic cars only. For most people that is fine, especially with so many new cars now automatic or electric. If there is any chance you will need a manual for work, think it over first or read our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence.

Our automatic instructors include Diana, who fits lessons around busy family routines, and Alecsandru, an approved driving instructor who used to teach at a college. Automatic driving lessons in Denaby Main: your questions

Is an automatic easier around Denaby Main?

For many learners, yes. The frequent bus stops on Doncaster Road and the school-run traffic mean lots of slowing and stopping, which is simpler without a clutch. You still need careful observation and good brake control.

Can I practise parking in an automatic before my test?

Yes. We often use quieter car parks such as the Asda on Hill Top Road to practise bay parking, then move on to parallel parking on suitable residential streets in the village.

Do automatic lessons cost more?

Prices for manual and automatic lessons are shown separately on our prices page. Many learners find they need fewer lessons in an automatic, which can balance things out.

Can I switch to an automatic part way through?

Yes. If the clutch is holding you back, you can move to an automatic at any point. Your instructor will help you adjust, and your earlier lessons still count. Observation and road sense carry straight over.
