Motability Scheme lessons in Denaby Main

Alma welcomes disabled learners and Motability Scheme customers in Denaby Main. Lessons take place in automatic cars with dual controls, starting from your home, and your instructor will adapt the pace to suit you.

Before we start

When you first get in touch, please tell us about any adaptation needs or anything that affects how you drive. That lets us plan the first session properly, including how much rest you might want and the best way for you to get in and out of the car.

An automatic car is often the easiest starting point for disabled learners, since there is no clutch to operate and no gear lever to move while driving. That frees your attention for the road.

Around Denaby Main, the frequent bus stops on Doncaster Road and the school streets near Crags Road mean plenty of slowing and stopping. In an automatic that comes down to moving smoothly between the brake and the accelerator, which many disabled learners find less tiring over a long lesson.

Pick-up in and around the village

Most lessons start at your front door anywhere in DN12 4. If another place suits you better, Dearne Valley Leisure Centre on Doncaster Road is a familiar landmark, with the Doncaster Road and Denaby Lane bus stop a short walk away. For anyone arriving by train, Conisbrough station on Station Road has step-free access to both platforms.

Tell us the address you prefer and we will make sure there is a safe place to stop.

Driving from 16

Most people must wait until 17 to drive a car. If you are awarded the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or you have put in a claim for it, you can begin at 16 instead. Apply for your provisional licence first on GOV.UK, which you can do from 15 years and 9 months.

Help with the cost of lessons

The Motability Foundation runs a grant that can pay for up to 40 hours of driving lessons. It is aimed at disabled people on the Motability Scheme who meet further criteria, such as being on a means-tested benefit, and applicants must already have passed the theory test.

The Foundation books grant-funded lessons itself. If you think you might qualify, ring them on 0800 500 3186 or read the Motability Foundation guidance on driving lesson grants before booking anything. If the grant is not an option, or you would prefer not to wait, you can learn privately with Alma at our standard lesson prices.

Getting an assessment

If you are unsure which car controls or adaptations would suit you, the charity Driving Mobility can help. It offers car driving and adaptation assessments at a Doncaster outreach centre, organised through its Leeds base.

Many learners find an assessment early on saves time, because lessons can then be planned around the right set-up.

When you take your test

When you book your practical test on GOV.UK, you can tell DVSA about a disability or health condition so that suitable arrangements can be made. The GOV.UK driving test pages explain the process. The test follows the usual format, and you can take it in the automatic car you have been learning in.

If you have had a Driving Mobility assessment, bring any recommendations to your lessons so we can plan around them from the start.

Lessons on Denaby roads

We usually begin in the quiet closes off Harrogate Drive, then move on to Hill Top Road and Doncaster Road. Later lessons include the Bambury Bridge roundabout and the A6023 into Conisbrough, building towards the busier roads you will meet on test in Doncaster.

Motability Scheme driving lessons in Denaby Main: your questions

Are grant-funded lessons available through Alma?

No. The Motability Foundation arranges grant-funded lessons directly. Contact the Foundation first on 0800 500 3186 to check your eligibility. If you do not qualify, or would rather begin straight away, you can learn with Alma as a private pupil.

Will I learn in an adapted car?

Our Motability lessons use automatic, dual controlled cars. Please tell us about your adaptation needs when you call so we can discuss what is possible before your first lesson.

I receive PIP. Can I start at 16?

If you get the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or have applied for it, you can start driving a car at 16. You will still need a provisional licence before your first lesson.

Where is the nearest driving assessment centre?

Driving Mobility runs an outreach centre in Doncaster for car driving and adaptation assessments. Appointments there are arranged through its Leeds centre.
