Alma Driving School covers Mexborough, the S64 town on the River Don at the western edge of the City of Doncaster. Lessons start from your door and build from quiet estate roads to the A6023 Greens Way dual carriageway and, later, the A630 towards the Doncaster driving test centre.
Mexborough sits in the Don valley close to where the River Dearne meets the Don, about seven miles south-west of Doncaster. It merges with Swinton to the south-west, which belongs to Rotherham borough, and with Denaby Main and Conisbrough to the east. Manvers and Wath-upon-Dearne lie to the west along the A6023.
One detail catches people out. Although Mexborough is part of the City of Doncaster, its postcode is S64, from the Sheffield postcode area, and local phone numbers start 01709. Around fifteen thousand people live here, so it is a proper town with a working centre and plenty of junctions for a learner to work through.
Most lessons start at home. We can also collect you from your workplace, and students can be picked up from school or college. Regular meeting points in and around Mexborough include:
Windhill has short residential roads such as Coniston Road and Chatsworth Avenue, where you can move off and stop without traffic piling up behind you. Off Harlington Road there is a cluster of streets named after racecourses. Sandown Road and Uttoxeter Avenue are two of them. Both areas suit early steering and your first left turns.
Most buses work round the town centre on a one-way loop using streets like Hartley Street and Bank Street, while High Street itself is pedestrianised. Adwick Road carries the Rotherham to Doncaster 221 past Montagu Hospital, and Wath Road carries the X20. Learning to read buses at stops and pedestrians near the shops happens here.
The A6023 runs along the south side of the town as Greens Way, a dual carriageway. It is where you first practise lane discipline and checking your blind spot before changing lanes at speed.
Doncaster Road leads east through Denaby Main into Conisbrough, where the A6023 meets the A630. From there the A630 continues through Warmsworth, past Junction 36 of the A1(M) and on into Balby before crossing Doncaster. By this stage you are driving test-standard roads.
Doncaster's practical test centre is at Unit 10 and 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, DN2 5YL, roughly three miles from the city centre on the Armthorpe side. That puts it on the far side of Doncaster from Mexborough, roughly nine miles away in a straight line and one of the longer runs in the borough.
The usual way follows the 221 bus as far as Balby: Doncaster Road through Denaby Main; Low Road and Doncaster Road in Conisbrough; then Sheffield Road at Warmsworth. From Balby the A630 crosses the city and heads out past Armthorpe to Junction 4 of the M18. On a motorway lesson you could instead join the A1(M) at Junction 36 and come round on the M18.
DVSA does not publish test routes, so we cannot say which roads your test will cover. Because the test centre is a long way from home, we plan several lessons on the east side of Doncaster so the roads there feel ordinary before your test. Our Doncaster driving test guide explains the day itself.
The theory test centre is at Fraser House on Netherhall Road in Doncaster. With about one train an hour from Mexborough station to Doncaster, getting there on your own is simple.
All Alma instructors are DBS checked and teach in dual controlled, fully insured cars, and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). You can request a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor. Nick, for example, focuses on hazard awareness and on understanding why things happen on the road.

No. Mexborough is in the City of Doncaster but uses the S64 postcode, which is part of the Sheffield postcode area. That makes no difference to lessons. We pick up across S64, and neighbouring Denaby Main and Conisbrough, which use DN12, are covered as well.
The Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Business Park is roughly nine miles away as the crow flies, on the east side of the city. Traffic through Conisbrough and Balby decides how long it takes, so we build plenty of time into test-day plans and practise the approach in advance.
Yes. We can pick you up from Montagu Hospital on Adwick Road at the end of a shift or drop you there for the start of one. Tell us your rota when you book and we will look for lesson times that fit around it.
Yes. Since June 2018 learner drivers can take motorway lessons with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car. From Mexborough the A630 leads to Junction 36 of the A1(M) near Warmsworth, which links with the M18. Ask about motorway lessons once you are confident on Greens Way.
