Mock driving test in Mexborough

A mock test is a dress rehearsal for your practical. From Mexborough it includes the long drive across to the east side of Doncaster, a test-length drive marked on the DVSA marking sheet, and a written debrief you can take away.

How the mock is structured

Allow about two hours, including the debrief. It begins the way the real test does, with an eyesight check: reading a number plate from 20 metres. Your instructor asks one tell me question before you set off and one show me question while you are driving.

The drive includes about 20 minutes of independent driving, following either a sat nav or road signs, plus one reversing exercise chosen from those used on the test. Some mocks include an emergency stop, because some real tests do. Your instructor gives directions and otherwise stays quiet.

Using the long drive across Doncaster

The Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Business Park is roughly nine miles from Mexborough in a straight line, on the east side of the city. We use the first part of the drive, along Doncaster Road through Denaby Main and the A630 through Conisbrough and Warmsworth, as a warm-up. The marked section then takes place on the kind of roads you find around the test centre.

Nobody outside DVSA knows which roads an examiner will choose on the day, because test routes are not published. What a mock gives you is a realistic sense of the area and of how long the drive takes, which matters when you plan your test-day lesson.

Marking it the DVSA way

Every fault is recorded on the DVSA marking sheet. A driving fault is a minor error. A serious fault could have caused danger, and a dangerous fault involves actual danger. To pass the real test you need 15 or fewer driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

Your instructor watches the things examiners care about, such as mirror checks before changing lanes on a dual carriageway, how you respond to signs and road markings, and your position on approach to roundabouts.

Your written debrief

At the end you go through the marking sheet together, and you keep a written debrief that sets out each fault and why it happened, along with what to practise. Instructors such as Sergiu are good at explaining the reason behind a mistake, and Nick at linking it to hazard awareness, so the fix makes sense instead of feeling like a rule to memorise.

Good times to book one

The best time is a few weeks before your practical test, when there is still time to work on whatever the mock shows up. It is also worth booking one after a failed test, so you can see whether the faults that cost you last time have gone.

Some learners book a second mock a week or so after the first, once they have worked on the debrief. Seeing the fault count drop is a strong confidence boost before the real thing.

On the day of the real test, you can ask your instructor to sit in the back. Mock driving tests in Mexborough: your questions

Why does a mock test from Mexborough take so long?

Part of the time goes on the drive from Mexborough across to the east side of Doncaster, which we treat as a warm-up. The marked drive itself is about the length of a real test, and the written debrief at the end takes a while because it goes through every mark in detail.

Will the mock use the same roads as my real test?

No one can promise that, because DVSA does not publish test routes. The mock uses the kind of roads you find around the Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Business Park, so the type of junctions and traffic will feel familiar on the day.

Should I book a mock if I failed my last test?

Yes, it is one of the most useful times to book. A mock shows whether the faults from your last test are still there and whether new ones have crept in. The written debrief then gives you a clear list of what to practise before you try again.

What should I bring to a mock test?

Bring your provisional licence. If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, bring those too, because the mock starts with the same number plate eyesight check as the real test. Wear comfortable shoes you would drive in, and allow time afterwards for the full written debrief.
