Passed years ago but barely driven since? Or moved to Mexborough and finding the local roads hard going? Refresher lessons pick up from where you are now, with a DVSA approved instructor beside you and dual controls as a safety net.
Some returning drivers passed their test long ago and stopped driving when they moved somewhere with good buses. Others have recently moved to Mexborough and want to learn the local layout before driving alone. A collision or near miss knocks some people's confidence, and a refresher helps them get going again.
Then there are drivers who have changed car, often moving from manual to automatic, and want an hour or two to feel at home. Whatever brings you here, there is no test at the end unless you ask for one. The general approach is described on our refresher driving lessons page.
The first lesson usually starts with a chat at your door about when you last drove and what worries you. Then you take the wheel on a quiet road such as Plumpton Avenue or Coniston Road while your instructor watches how you handle the car.
From that short drive your instructor can tell what has stayed sharp and what has faded. Car control often comes back quickly, and the work goes on observation and on modern road layouts. You agree a plan together before the end of the session.
If you learned here before 2002, part of the A6023 will look different. A short stretch crossing the railway between Doncaster and Sheffield was bypassed that year, with a new bridge over the railway and the River Don west of the old level crossing. Greens Way runs as a dual carriageway along the south side of the town.
The town centre has changed too. High Street is pedestrianised and buses circle the centre on a one-way loop. The rules have moved on as well: the 2022 update to the Highway Code introduced a hierarchy of road users and new priorities for people crossing at junctions, which is worth going through with your instructor on real streets.
Most refresher courses start with ordinary local driving. Adwick Road tests your observation because Montagu Hospital and the 221 buses are both on it. Its junction with Doncaster Road is a good place to brush up on emerging. Wath Road and Hartley Street bring more buses near the stands.
Once that feels comfortable, Greens Way gives you dual carriageway practice. Joining it smoothly and leaving at the right point are skills that fade quickly without use, and a few runs along it usually bring them back.
For many returning drivers the bigger roads are the real hurdle. The A630 runs from Conisbrough through Warmsworth to Junction 36 of the A1(M) between Warmsworth and Balby. The A1(M) links with the M18 at the Wadworth Interchange, Junction 2 of the M18, so a refresher can build up to a short motorway section without a long drive first.
Your instructor can coach joining from a slip road and keeping to the left-hand lane unless overtaking, with the dual controls ready if needed. Read more about motorway lessons and Pass Plus.
Tell us which drives matter to you. That might be the run to work at Manvers, the school run to Maple Road or a regular trip into Doncaster. If you would feel more relaxed with a woman in the passenger seat, ask for a female driving instructor.
Drivers nearby book the same way; see refresher driving lessons in Conisbrough and refresher lessons in Sprotbrough. Our Mexborough driving lessons page lists pick-up points around the town.

It varies a lot. Some people only want a single session to check their driving is still safe, while others book a block to work up to the A630 and the A1(M). Your instructor will tell you honestly after the first lesson how much more practice they think would help.
No. A refresher lesson is private tuition, so nothing about it affects your licence. If you have a medical condition that affects your driving, though, the law requires you to tell the DVLA yourself, and GOV.UK explains which conditions that covers.
Yes. Alma has automatic cars, so you can learn how creep and kickdown feel before you drive your own car. A session that mixes the town centre loop with Greens Way is usually enough to show you how the gearbox behaves in slow traffic and at speed.
Male and female instructors covering Mexborough. Manual and automatic cars, all dual controlled.
Manual or automatic, complete beginner or coming back after years off. Tell us where you are up to and we will build a plan that gets you to test.
