If the thought of driving makes your stomach turn, you are in good company. Plenty of our Conisbrough pupils start out anxious. We begin on calm residential streets close to home and only move on when you say you are ready, however long that takes.
Your first lessons happen away from the bus routes and the A630. Good starting points include the residential avenues around Ivanhoe Road, such as Cedric Avenue and Rowena Road, or the groves in DN12 2 like Pine Grove. These streets are usually much quieter than the through routes, with space to pull over whenever you want a breather.
We can also choose the time of day carefully. Mid-morning or early afternoon avoids the school run near De Warenne Academy on Gardens Lane, so the roads you practise on are as calm as they get.
If you would rather not pull away outside your own house, your instructor can drive you to a quiet street first and swap seats there. The opening part of the lesson is often spent with the engine off, going through the cockpit drill and each control until the car feels less strange.
Then you move a few metres and stop again. Repeating that small step until it feels ordinary is how confidence starts to grow. Most nervous pupils are surprised by how much they have done by the end of the first hour.
You can stay at any stage for as long as you need. Moving back a step for a lesson is perfectly normal, and nobody will push you onto a road you are not ready for.
Conisbrough's slopes worry a lot of nervous learners, especially the idea of rolling back. We tackle them gradually, starting with gentle gradients and building up to roads like Windgate Hill only when your control is steady. The dual controls mean your instructor can always help with the brake.
If the clutch is the main source of anxiety, think about learning in an automatic. Our automatic driving lessons in Conisbrough remove stalling from the equation completely, which many nervous pupils find makes a huge difference.
The right instructor matters more for nervous learners than for anyone. Loredana, one of our co-founders, is especially good with nervous learners and people who have lost confidence. FoFo is also known for his patience with anxious pupils, and Sergiu never shouts and always explains why something happened.
Some learners feel more relaxed with a woman beside them. You can ask for one of our female driving instructors, or meet our male driving instructors if you prefer.
