Motability driving lessons in Tickhill let disabled learners and Motability Scheme customers learn from home in an automatic car with dual controls. Before any lesson is booked we talk about your needs, including any adaptations you might use, so the plan fits you from the very first drive.
We teach Motability learners in automatic cars, which remove the clutch pedal and the manual gear change altogether. For many people living with pain or fatigue, that leaves a much more manageable set of controls. The instructor's dual controls add a safety net while you learn.
If you use, or think you may need, adaptations such as hand controls, please mention this on your first call so we can be clear about what our cars offer. See our main Motability driving lessons page and automatic driving lessons in Tickhill for more on how lessons work.
We collect you from home, whether that is on the estates off Common Lane or in the older streets near St Mary's Church. Some of the older streets in the centre are narrow, so if stopping outside your door is awkward we can arrange to meet on a wider, quieter road nearby where there is room to get in and out comfortably.
Take as long as you need to settle into the seat. Your instructor will help you adjust the seat and mirrors to suit you, along with the steering wheel position, before every lesson.
If you use a wheelchair or walking aid, tell us how you usually get into a car and whether anything needs to be stored during the lesson. Knowing this in advance means your instructor can plan the pick-up properly and nothing is rushed on the day.
Normally you have to be 17 to drive a car. Receiving the enhanced rate of the mobility part of PIP, or having applied for it, lowers that age to 16. You will still need a provisional licence, which can be applied for from 15 years and 9 months on gov.uk.
Remember that the theory test comes before the practical test. Many 16-year-old learners start lessons and theory revision together, which keeps both moving.
A Motability Foundation grant can pay for up to 40 hours of driving lessons. It is open to Motability Scheme customers who meet further criteria, among them being on a means-tested benefit, and who already hold a theory test pass. The Foundation handles these lessons directly, so the right first call is to the Foundation on 0800 500 3186. Details are on its driving lessons grants page.
Paying for lessons yourself with Alma is the alternative if you do not qualify or you want to begin straight away. Current prices are on our prices page.
If you are unsure what driving set-up would suit you, Driving Mobility, a national charity, can assess you. Its Doncaster outreach service covers car driving and vehicle adaptations, and appointments are made through the charity's Leeds centre. Sharing the assessment with your instructor helps them plan lessons around your needs.
Lessons start on quiet estate roads and build towards the town centre and the A60. Your practical test takes place at the Doncaster test centre on Shaw Wood Business Park, so later lessons include the drive north and roads like the ones you will meet there. Learners nearer the railway can book Motability driving lessons in Rossington, and the Tickhill driving lessons page explains more about the area.

The Motability Foundation does. It arranges grant-funded lessons itself, so ring the Foundation on 0800 500 3186 before anything else. If you are not eligible, or would like to start sooner, we can teach you as a private pupil in an automatic car.
Yes, as long as they receive the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component or have applied for it. They will need a provisional licence first. Lessons can then start from home, with theory revision alongside.
Not always, but it can help, especially if you might need adaptations. Driving Mobility runs a Doncaster outreach service for assessments, booked through its Leeds centre, and the report helps your instructor plan.
Call 07402 034084 or send us a WhatsApp message. Tell us a little about your needs and any equipment you use, and we will talk through how lessons could work for you.
