Our Motability driving lessons in Rossington suit disabled learners, including people on the Motability Scheme, who would like to learn in an automatic car fitted with dual controls. The first conversation is about you: your condition, any equipment you use and what you hope being able to drive will change.
Every Motability learner with us drives an automatic. Taking away the clutch pedal and gear lever leaves your left foot free and keeps both hands on the wheel for longer, which can make a real difference if a condition affects your grip or leg strength, or makes you tired quickly. Your instructor has a brake pedal on their side too, so the car can be slowed if something unexpected happens on Grange Lane or at the West End Lane level crossing.
Some learners need equipment such as hand controls or a steering ball. Raise this right at the start, ideally on the phone before a first lesson is booked, and we will be straight with you about whether our cars are suitable. Our main Motability driving lessons page has more background, and automatic driving lessons in Rossington explains how the gearbox makes local roads easier.
Lessons start and finish at your home, wherever that is in the parish: the colliery-era streets around King Avenue, the old village near St Michael's Church or a new build at Pheasant Hill Park. Getting in and out of the car is part of the lesson time, so there is no rush.
If a driveway is narrow or the kerb outside is awkward, we can meet you somewhere flatter with more room beside the car. The free car park at Rossington Leisure Centre on West End Lane is one place that works for some learners.
The usual starting age for driving a car is 17. There is an exception for anyone who receives the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or who has applied for it: they may drive from their 16th birthday. A provisional licence comes first, through the gov.uk provisional licence service, and the application can go in from 15 years and 9 months.
The theory test has to be passed before a practical test can be booked. Revising for it alongside your first few lessons usually works well, because what you read about road signs and hazards starts to make sense once you see them from the driver's seat.
The Motability Foundation offers a grant towards driving lessons, covering as many as 40 hours, for people on the Motability Scheme. Applicants also have to meet some extra conditions, one of which is receiving a means-tested benefit, and they must already hold a theory test pass. Grant lessons are booked and organised by the Foundation, never by us, so speak to the Foundation before anything else. Its helpline is 0800 500 3186, and the details are on the Motability Foundation website.
Not everyone qualifies, and applying takes time. If you would rather not wait, or the criteria do not fit your situation, you can book lessons with Alma as a private pupil. Current costs are on our lesson prices page.
Driving Mobility is a charity that looks at whether, and how, a person can drive safely, and which adaptations might help. It holds outreach appointments in Doncaster for car driving and adaptation checks, booked through its Leeds centre. The written report you receive afterwards gives you and your instructor a clear starting point.
First lessons stay on short, quiet streets such as the crescents off Central Drive. Later you build up to the bus routes on Earl Avenue, then the roundabouts on Great Yorkshire Way. Your practical test will be at the Doncaster centre on Shaw Wood Business Park, and the last stage of your lessons covers roads like the ones you will meet there.
Living a little further east? Motability driving lessons in Finningley follow the same approach. More about local roads and pick-up points is on the Rossington driving lessons page.

Tell us on the first call. Our cars are automatic and dual controlled, and we will be honest about whether they suit your needs. A Driving Mobility assessment can show which adaptations would help, and its report is useful for planning lessons.
