Driving lessons in Rossington

Alma Driving School teaches driving lessons in Rossington for learners in New Rossington, the old village by St Michael's Church and the newer homes at Pheasant Hill Park. Our DVSA approved instructors collect you from home, work, school or college in a dual controlled manual or automatic car.

Rossington, DN11: two villages and a railway between them

Rossington is a former mining village in the DN11 postcode district. It lies roughly five and a half miles south of Doncaster city centre. The East Coast Main Line runs straight through it. On one side sit the old village and Rossington Bridge, where the A638 crosses the River Torne. On the other is New Rossington, built for the families who came to work at Rossington Main Colliery after it was sunk between 1912 and 1915.

The pit closed in 2007 and its land has become Pheasant Hill Park, the big housing scheme off Great Yorkshire Way, with newer streets such as Heatherfields Crescent opening off West End Lane. For a learner that mix is useful. In one lesson you can drive the colliery-era avenues with cars parked down both kerbs, then new estate roads where cul-de-sacs and tight bends ask for slow, careful steering.

We pick up from home, work, school or college. Useful pick-up points include Rossington Leisure Centre on West End Lane, the National Horseracing College at Rossington Hall on the Great North Road and the iPort logistics site off Great Yorkshire Way.

Rossington roads from first lesson to test standard

Every learner moves at their own pace, but most Rossington courses follow a similar order, with each stage adding one new kind of road.

  1. Quiet side streets. Crescents such as Haig Crescent off Central Drive and Foljambe Crescent off King Georges Road are where you learn the cockpit drill and how to move off and pull up at the kerb with nobody queuing behind you.
  2. Bus routes and parked cars. King Avenue and Earl Avenue carry the 355 and 456 buses past long lines of parked cars, which is where you learn to judge gaps and decide when to hold back for oncoming traffic.
  3. Junctions and the level crossing. Radburn Road and Gattison Lane give you plenty of T-junctions to read, and the barrier crossing where West End Lane becomes Station Road teaches you to stop in the right place and keep the rails clear.
  4. Great Yorkshire Way. This dual carriageway runs from the A638 at Parrot's Corner up to Junction 3 of the M18, with several roundabouts where lane choice and speed both matter, often with lorries heading for the iPort.
  5. Out towards the city. The A638 Bawtry Road takes you north into Bessacarr, where it widens to a dual carriageway near Cantley Lane and runs on past Doncaster Racecourse, good preparation for the city roads you will drive on test day.

Getting to Doncaster driving test centre from Rossington

Practical tests for Rossington learners are taken at the Doncaster test centre at Unit 10 and 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, DN2 5YL. It is on the Armthorpe side of the city, about three miles from the centre, so from Rossington you cross a good stretch of south and east Doncaster to reach it.

There are two sensible ways in. One heads north on Great Yorkshire Way to Junction 3 of the M18 and carries on along White Rose Way past Lakeside. The other follows the A638 Bawtry Road through Bessacarr and past the racecourse. We use both during lessons so the drive on test day feels routine and you have already handled dual carriageway and busy city roundabouts.

DVSA does not publish test routes, so nobody can promise where your test will go. What we can do is make you comfortable on roads like the ones you will meet on test, from large roundabouts to quiet residential streets where you might be asked to pull up on the right. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test covers the day itself.

Lesson types for Rossington learners

Choosing a male or female instructor

Some learners feel more settled with a woman in the passenger seat, while others have no preference at all. You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor when you book, and we will do our best to match you.

Loredana, one of our two co-founders, is known for helping nervous learners and people who have lost confidence. Diana teaches in automatic cars only. Bogdan, one of our male instructors, teaches manual. Sergiu takes time to explain why a mistake happened instead of raising his voice. Every one of them is a DVSA approved driving instructor and DBS checked.

Prices and how to book

Lesson prices and block booking packages are kept on one page so they are always current: see our driving lesson prices, and the guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster if you are comparing schools. Pupils' own words are on our reviews page.

Not sure which car to learn in? The manual or automatic licence guide sets out what each licence lets you drive. If you have not sat your theory test yet, read how to pass your theory test first time before you book it. Questions from Rossington learners

Do you pick up from New Rossington and the old village?

Yes. We pick up right across Rossington, from the colliery-era streets around King Avenue and Grange Lane to the old village near St Michael's Church and the new homes at Pheasant Hill Park. We can also collect you from work or college, including the National Horseracing College at Rossington Hall.

How far is Rossington from the Doncaster driving test centre?

The test centre is on Shaw Wood Business Park on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, about three miles from the city centre. Rossington is around five and a half miles south of the centre, so the drive takes in either Great Yorkshire Way and White Rose Way or the A638 Bawtry Road through Bessacarr.

Can I have lessons on Great Yorkshire Way and the M18?

Yes, once your instructor feels you are ready. Great Yorkshire Way is a dual carriageway on your doorstep and leads to Junction 3 of the M18. Since June 2018 learners can drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, which we cover in motorway lessons and Pass Plus.

Will I learn the level crossing on West End Lane?

Yes, because level crossings are part of everyday driving here. You learn to approach at a steady speed, stop behind the white line when the amber light shows, wait while the red lights flash and the barriers are down, then move off only once the barriers have fully lifted and the lights have gone out.
