Manual driving lessons in Tickhill use the town's slow historic streets and the faster roads beyond it to teach clutch and gear control properly. A manual pass also lets you drive automatic cars, so you are covered whatever you end up buying or borrowing.
Passing in a manual car gives you a licence for manual and automatic cars alike. In a rural corner of Doncaster, where a family car or a works van may well have a gearbox, that flexibility is worth having. It does usually take a few more lessons than learning in an automatic, because there is more for your feet and left hand to do.
The main manual driving lessons page explains how our manual courses run across Doncaster. The manual or automatic licence guide lays out the pros and cons if you are torn between the two.
Castlegate and the Market Place are where clutch control really gets tested. Behind slow traffic or a bus you will often be moving at walking pace, holding the clutch around the biting point and covering the brake. Done well, the car glides. If you get it wrong the car lurches or stalls, which is why we practise it on quieter streets first.
The sharp left bend by St Mary's Church needs a low gear, chosen before you reach it. At the T-junction in the Market Place you bring the car to a smooth stop, hold it with the parking brake if you are waiting, then find the biting point and move off once the way is clear. Few places pack those skills so close together.
As you leave by North Gate and Doncaster Road the houses thin out beyond Dadsley Road and the town gives way to open road. This is where you learn to build up through the gears smoothly, timing each change to the engine and the road ahead rather than rushing.
Heading into Wadworth the process runs in reverse. You check your mirrors and ease off, then select the right gear for the lower speed, often skipping gears with a block change. Spotting the lower speed limit signs early gives you time to do it calmly.
Tickhill sits low, at around 20 metres above sea level, and most of its streets are fairly level. For hill starts we head north on the A60 towards Wadworth Hill, where you can practise holding the car on the parking brake, finding the biting point and moving away without rolling back.
It is worth getting this right. At any point on your practical test you may be asked to pull up on the left and move off again, and the examiner will be watching for good control and proper observation before you go.
Stripe Road through Hesley and Worksop Road heading south past Stoney Brigg Farm are classic rural roads. On roads like these the national speed limit may apply, and part of manual driving is picking a speed and gear that suit the bend ahead, not the number on the sign.
You will learn to brake in a straight line before a bend, select the right gear early and drive through the curve with gentle acceleration. Meeting a tractor or a lorry on a narrower stretch teaches you to slow down early and give plenty of room.

Yes. The town centre gives you slow-speed clutch control at the Market Place and the bend by St Mary's Church. The A60 and the country roads then give you every gear. Having both on your doorstep means less time travelling to the right kind of road.
Most manual learners stall now and then, especially at junctions. That is normal and the dual controls mean it is never dangerous. Stalling becomes rare once you can feel the biting point without thinking, which usually comes after a few lessons on quiet estate streets.
It varies from person to person. Lesson frequency and private practice both make a difference, as does how quickly clutch control settles. Your instructor will give you an honest estimate, and our prices page shows block booking packages.
