Never driven before? That is exactly where most of our Kirk Sandall pupils start. Your first lessons happen on the quieter residential streets of the suburb, at a pace that lets you get used to the car before you meet Doncaster Road and the busier junctions beyond it.
Before you can drive on the road you need a provisional driving licence. You can apply up to three months before you turn 16, through GOV.UK, and start lessons in a car from your 17th birthday. Some disabled learners can start at 16, which our Motability lessons in Kirk Sandall page explains.
You do not need to know anything about cars. Bring your provisional licence and your glasses if you wear them for distance, and wear shoes you can feel the pedals through.
Everyone moves at a different pace. If you need longer on any stage you simply take longer. There is no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
The streets built for the Pilkington glassworkers were laid out as a planned village, away from the main road. That makes them calmer than the through routes, so you can practise without a queue forming behind you. Your instructor still watches for children and cyclists stepping out between parked cars, and uses the dual controls if needed.
Once you are comfortable, the move onto Doncaster Road feels natural. You will pass the Aldi and the war memorial opposite the Glassmaker pub, and learn to deal with buses pulling in and out at the stops between Graham Road and Sandall Lane.
It makes sense to start revising for the theory test early. It has two parts. The first is 50 multiple-choice questions, with 43 needed to pass, and the second is 14 hazard perception clips scored out of 75, with 44 needed. You must pass both before you can book your practical test. Your pass certificate lasts two years. Book through GOV.UK and read our tips on how to pass the theory test first time.
Lessons and theory revision help each other. Hazard perception makes much more sense once you have driven past a school or waited behind a bus on Doncaster Road. Likewise, the Highway Code rules on giving way at junctions become real the first time you turn into a side road and spot someone waiting to cross. You can read the full Highway Code on GOV.UK for free.

A first lesson needs enough time to cover the controls and the cockpit drill, with plenty of moving off and stopping that does not feel rushed. Our prices page shows the lesson lengths available. Many beginners like a slightly longer first session so there is time to relax into it.
No. Your instructor will drive you to a quiet residential street in Kirk Sandall before you take over. You will only move on to Doncaster Road and busier junctions when you and your instructor both feel you are ready.
If you want to be able to drive any car, learn in a manual. If you are happy with automatics only, or want to learn in fewer hours, an automatic may suit you better. Our guide to manual and automatic licences sets out the differences.
No. All your lessons are in our dual controlled cars. Extra practice with a family member can help, if they are allowed to supervise a learner and you are insured on their car, but it is optional.
