Your first ever driving lesson in Woodlands starts on the straight, quiet avenues inside the village, well back from the Great North Road. Before that, a little preparation helps. Here is what to sort out, what the first hour involves and how the village roads help you progress.
Our theory test guide explains the 50 multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception clips. Starting your revision early means you are not waiting on a theory pass once your driving is ready.
Woodlands was planned as a whole, so its streets are more regular than most. Long avenues run between short terraces, many with grass verges, and the roads around The Park give a gentle loop with no main road traffic. That means fewer surprises in your first few hours and more time to concentrate on the car itself.
Because the Great North Road runs along one edge of the village, your instructor can keep you well away from it until you are ready, then bring you out at a quiet moment.
Your instructor will collect you and drive to a quiet stretch of avenue before you swap seats. Harold Avenue and West Avenue are typical choices. The long straight roads give a clear view, so there is very little to distract you. You will learn the cockpit drill first: doors, seat, head restraint and mirrors, then seatbelt.
Next comes a tour of the controls, including the indicators, wipers and lights, plus the dual controls on your instructor's side. Your instructor will explain that they can brake at any moment, which helps most beginners relax.
When you are ready, you will check your mirrors and the blind spot over your right shoulder, then move away gently from the kerb. After a short distance you will pull up again on the left. Repeating this a few times is normal for a first lesson. In a manual car you will also find the biting point and learn to hold it.
Most first lessons finish with you moving off and stopping along the avenue with some help from your instructor. That is a good start, and the next lesson builds on it. Before you finish, your instructor will tell you what went well and what the plan is for next time, so you know what to expect when you get back in the car.
Once you can move off and stop, you will start steering around The Crescent and The Oval, then turning into side roads off the avenues. Later you will reach Green Lane and the junctions onto the Great North Road. It depends on what you want to drive later. A manual licence covers both kinds of car, while an automatic licence is quicker for many people to get. Our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence explains the pros and cons.

That is completely normal. Tell your instructor when they collect you, and they will spend longer explaining the controls before you start the engine. The quiet avenues mean there is no pressure from other traffic, and you can stop for a break whenever you like.
