Never sat in the driver's seat before? Your first lesson in Adwick-le-Street begins on the slow streets of the old village, near St Laurence's Church, with time to get comfortable before the engine even starts. Here is what that first hour looks like and what to sort out beforehand.
You cannot drive on the road without a provisional licence. Applications open at 15 years and 9 months through the provisional licence service on GOV.UK, although lessons on public roads begin at 17. There is one exception: if you receive the enhanced rate of PIP's mobility component, or have a claim for it in progress, you can drive from 16.
You do not need to pass the theory test before your first lesson, but you must pass it before booking the practical test. Many of our learners start revising for the multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception clips at the same time as their first few lessons, because what you see on the road helps the theory make sense. The theory test guide has tips.
Your instructor collects you and drives to a quiet spot before you swap seats. In Adwick that usually means Fern Bank or the end of Village Street near the park with the bowling green, well away from the Great North Road. These streets are slow, and there is space to stop and start again as often as you need.
If you are being collected from Outwood Academy Adwick or from Adwick station, your instructor will drive the short distance into the village before you swap seats. Nobody expects you to pull out onto a busy road in lesson one.
Before moving, you will learn the cockpit drill. It is a simple routine you will repeat at the start of every drive for the rest of your life:
Your instructor will also show you the controls, the dual controls on their side, and what each warning light on the dashboard means.
The aim of lesson one is simple: get the car moving safely and bring it to rest where you choose. You will check your mirrors and blind spot and give a signal if one is needed. Then you pull away gently. After that you will practise pulling up on the left, close to the kerb, at a point your instructor picks. In a manual car you will also start to find the biting point.
By the end of the hour most learners can move off and stop a few times on Fern Bank without help. Steering round the bends, and your first left turn into a side road, usually come in lesson two or three.
Once moving off and stopping feel natural, lessons widen out to Church Lane and Station Road. After that come Doncaster Lane and Adwick Lane, each a step busier than the last. Our main beginner driving lessons page explains the full course. If you prefer to learn without a clutch, see automatic driving lessons in Adwick-le-Street. Learners just over the A19 can read about beginner driving lessons in Bentley, and our Adwick-le-Street area page covers everything else.

It varies a lot from person to person, so we will not give you a number before we have seen you drive. Your instructor will give you an honest view after a few lessons, and you can track progress against the skills the DVSA expects at test standard.
Yes. You can start in an automatic and stay in one, or start in a manual. Learning in an automatic means you only use two pedals, which some beginners find easier. The licence you get will be automatic only if you pass in one.
Bring your provisional licence and wear comfortable shoes with thin soles so you can feel the pedals. If you wear glasses or contact lenses for distance, bring them. You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres.
They can, provided they meet the legal requirements to supervise a learner and the car is insured for you to drive. Extra practice helps, but ask your instructor what to work on so you do not pick up habits that need unlearning later.
