You passed your test, maybe years ago, but now driving feels unfamiliar. Refresher lessons in Adwick-le-Street put an approved instructor beside you in a dual controlled car while you get used to the A19, the Great North Road and, if you want, the A1(M) from Red House again.
Our refresher learners are full licence holders. Some have not driven for a few years because they lived in a city or relied on the train from Adwick station. Some have just moved to the area and do not yet know the roads. Others had a bump and lost their nerve, or have bought an automatic after driving a manual. All of them want an hour or two with someone calm in the passenger seat.
Most first sessions start with a gentle drive around the old village so your instructor can see how you handle the car. From there we head wherever your worries lie, whether that is Adwick Lane at rush hour or the run down the A638 towards York Road and the city. At the end you get an honest view of what is solid and what needs more work.
There is no test at the end and no fixed course. You tell us what worries you and we plan around it. The main refresher driving lessons page explains how sessions are usually structured.
The Highwayman Roundabout, where Doncaster Lane meets the A638, is a common one. Traffic arrives quickly from the dual carriageway, and you need to choose your lane and gap without hesitating. We will drive it with you as many times as it takes, from both directions.
The A19 through Toll Bar and Bentley has also changed. In summer 2025 the council resurfaced parts of it to support upgraded pedestrian crossings, including Askern Road outside Toll Bar Primary School. If you have not driven it for a while, it is worth relearning where the crossings and bus stops are before you drive it alone.
Many returning drivers in Adwick are happy around the village but avoid the motorway entirely. The A1(M) is right on your doorstep at junction 38, the Red House Interchange, so it is the obvious place to start. We begin by joining from the slip road while matching the speed of traffic and checking your blind spot. Then we build up to changing lanes and leaving again.
Drivers who have never used a motorway at all should read our motorway lessons and Pass Plus page to see what is involved. Many people combine a couple of refresher hours with a motorway session.
If you passed before 2022, some rules have changed. The Highway Code now sets out a hierarchy of road users, giving more priority to people walking and cycling at junctions. Your instructor will point out where that matters on local roads, such as side road junctions along Doncaster Lane where pedestrians may be waiting to cross.
We also cover anything else you ask about, from parking in a bay at the station car park to using a sat nav without losing concentration.
Refresher lessons work the same way on the Woodlands side of the Great North Road, and our refresher driving lessons in Woodlands page covers that side. If anxiety is the main issue, nervous driver lessons in Adwick-le-Street go at an even gentler pace. Everything else about learning locally is on the Adwick-le-Street driving lessons page.

Many returning drivers feel ready after a few sessions, but some prefer more. There is no set number. After your first lesson your instructor will tell you honestly how your driving looks and suggest what to focus on next.
Our lessons take place in our dual controlled, fully insured cars. That means your instructor can step in if needed, which helps many people relax. Once you feel confident, practising in your own car between sessions is a sensible next step.
Yes. If you hold a full manual licence you can already drive an automatic legally. A refresher lesson in one of our automatic cars helps you learn how the car creeps and brakes before you buy one.
No. Nobody marks you and there is nothing to pass. Your instructor is there to help you drive safely and comfortably again, at your own pace and on the roads you actually use.
