Automatic driving lessons in Adwick-le-Street

An automatic car takes the clutch and gear lever out of the picture, so you can give all your attention to junctions and other traffic. Around Adwick-le-Street that means calmer starts on Doncaster Lane, less juggling in Toll Bar queues and smoother joins onto the Great North Road.

What changes when you learn in an automatic

An automatic gearbox chooses the gear for you. There are just two pedals (accelerator and brake), both worked by your right foot. Many learners need fewer hours to reach test standard, though the licence you get is automatic only. Read our main automatic driving lessons page for how the course is structured.

Automatic lessons suit Adwick learners who will mostly drive locally, perhaps to Adwick station for the train to Leeds, along the A638 to work at Red House or into Doncaster for shopping. If you might need to drive a manual later, our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence is worth reading first.

Creep and brake control in the old village

An automatic car moves forward on its own when you take your foot off the brake. This is called creep, and learning to use it is the first thing we cover. On Village Street and around St Laurence's Church you will edge past parked cars using only the brake, which teaches gentle, precise control at walking pace.

Creep is also how you handle the junctions on Church Lane. You roll up to the line and hold the car on the footbrake while you look both ways. Then you pull away smoothly. Because there is no clutch to worry about, your eyes stay on the traffic.

School run traffic and stop-start roads

Around Adwick Primary School on Windmill Balk Lane, the roads get busy at drop-off and pick-up times. Parked cars and children crossing need patience and good observation, and so do the buses on the nearby A638. In an automatic, slow queues are simply a matter of easing off and on the brake, which leaves you free to watch for pedestrians stepping out between cars.

The A19 through Toll Bar and Bentley is a similar story, with bus stops, pedestrian crossings and junctions close together. Many automatic learners find this kind of road far less tiring than they expected because the car does the gear work. Your instructor will still teach you to read the road early, because good planning matters whatever the gearbox.

Joining faster roads

Once you can handle the village and the A19, we move onto the A638. From the Highwayman Roundabout you will practise joining the dual carriageway. That means building speed firmly and checking your blind spot before moving across into a gap. An automatic responds quickly when you press down, which helps you match the speed of traffic already on the road.

The roundabouts towards Red House Interchange are good for lane discipline and signalling. When you are ready, the A1(M) at junction 38 is close by for motorway lessons with your instructor.

Instructors and nearby areas

Automatic lessons are booked in the same 90-minute or two-hour slots as manual ones, so there is time to leave the village for the A19 or the A638 and still finish with some parking practice near your pick-up.

Diana and Alecsandru both teach in automatic cars, and you can ask for a male or female instructor when you book. If you live closer to Carcroft, see our automatic driving lessons in Carcroft page. Learners who want quick progress can combine an automatic car with one of our intensive driving courses in Adwick-le-Street, and everything else about learning locally is on our Adwick-le-Street driving lessons page.

Automatic driving lessons in Adwick-le-Street: your questions

Can I drive a manual car after passing in an automatic?

No. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence. To drive a manual car you would need to pass another practical test in a manual. Plenty of drivers never need one, especially if they plan to buy an automatic or a hybrid.

Do automatic lessons cost more?

Automatic lessons are priced separately from manual lessons. Current rates and package options are on our prices page. Because many learners need fewer hours in an automatic, the total cost of learning can work out similar.

Is the driving test different in an automatic car?

The test is the same. You still have the eyesight check and show me tell me questions, followed by independent driving and one reversing exercise. The only difference is the gearbox, and your certificate will show that you passed in an automatic.

Do you have automatic cars available for evening lessons?

We teach automatic lessons at a range of times that include evenings after work or college. Availability changes from week to week. Call or WhatsApp us with the days and times that suit you and we will find a slot that fits.
