Beginner driving lessons in Moorends

Never driven before? That is fine. Beginner lessons in Moorends start on a side street away from the bus route, with your instructor explaining everything before the car moves. Here is how your first few lessons are likely to go, and what to sort out beforehand.

What to sort out first

Apply for your provisional licence on GOV.UK. You can do this from 15 years and 9 months old, and you can drive from 17. Anyone getting the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, or who has applied for it, can start at 16. Your licence needs to arrive before your first lesson.

Bring the licence on the day, along with any glasses you need for driving. You should be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, because that is the eyesight check on the test. Wear shoes with a thin sole so you can feel the pedals.

Lesson one: getting to know the car

Your instructor picks you up at home and drives to a side street away from the bus route, such as Kents Gardens or Gainford Road. You swap seats and start with the cockpit drill: doors closed, seat position, steering wheel, head restraint, mirrors and seatbelt. Getting this right makes everything else easier.

Then you learn the controls. In a manual, that means the clutch and the gears, and finding the biting point. In an automatic, it means drive, neutral, reverse and park. Most first lessons end with you moving off and stopping several times on your own, with your instructor talking you through each step.

Lesson two and three: steering and junctions

Once moving off and stopping feel normal, you practise steering around bends and pulling up neatly at the kerb. Then come junctions. Turning left out of a side road is usually first, followed by right turns, which need more observation.

Before long you will be emerging onto Marshland Road, which is busier because of the buses. Your instructor will explain the mirror, signal, manoeuvre routine and help you judge gaps in the traffic.

Moving beyond the village

As your confidence grows, lessons head south along King Edward Road into Thorne. The town centre brings more traffic and more pedestrians, and later on the A614 and the roundabout at junction 6 of the M18 introduce faster roads and lane choice. There is no rush. Your instructor will only move you on when you are ready.

What your instructor does

Expect plenty of explanation. If something goes wrong, your instructor will help you pull over somewhere safe and explain what happened. Then you try again. Nick, for example, puts a lot of emphasis on hazard awareness and understanding why things happen on the road, which helps beginners build good habits from the very first hour.

When to take your theory test

You must pass the theory test before you can book a practical test. It has two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions, where you need 43 correct, and hazard perception, where 14 video clips are scored out of 75 and the pass mark is 44. A pass is valid for two years.

Plenty of beginners study for it alongside their first lessons, so the Highway Code makes more sense when they see it on the road. Our guide to passing your theory test first time has study tips, and you can book through GOV.UK.

Beginner driving lessons in Moorends: your questions

What if I have never even sat in the driver's seat?

That is exactly who beginner lessons are for. Your instructor starts from the very beginning and explains each control. You only drive when you feel ready. The car has dual controls, so your instructor can step in at any moment.

Can I learn to drive at 16?

Usually you can start driving at 17. If you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component, you can start at 16. Our page on Motability driving lessons in Moorends has more.

Should I start in a manual or an automatic?

It depends on your plans. A manual gives you a licence for both types of car, while an automatic is often quicker to learn. Read our guide to the manual or automatic licence before you decide.

Where will my first lesson start?

At home, in most cases. Your instructor picks you up anywhere in Moorends and drives to a side street to begin. Our main driving lessons in Moorends page lists other pick-up points if home is not convenient.
