Nerves are common, and they do not stop you learning to drive. Lessons for nervous learners in Moorends begin on side streets away from the bus route and move forward only when you are ready. You can choose a female or male instructor, and you can stop for a break whenever you need one.
The village helps in a few ways. It is around two metres above sea level, so there are no hills to worry about early on. It is also compact. Marshland Road is the one main road, and plenty of residential streets branch off it. You can spend your first lessons within a few minutes of home.
When you do move on, Thorne is just to the south along King Edward Road. You are never far from familiar streets, which can be reassuring when you are nervous.
We start with a chat about what worries you. Your instructor then drives to a side street, such as Kents Gardens or Gainford Road, and you swap seats. You might spend time just getting comfortable before moving off at walking pace. There is no pressure to do more than you want.
You go back over moving off and stopping, then try some gentle turns at quiet junctions. Your instructor talks you through each one in plenty of time.
If you feel ready, you might emerge onto Marshland Road for the first time and follow it for a short distance. If you do not feel ready, you stay on the side streets for longer. Both are fine.
After that, lessons usually follow King Edward Road into Thorne and the town centre. Selby Road and the roundabout at junction 6 of the M18 come later. You can stay at any step as long as you need.
You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor. Loredana, one of our co-founders, is especially good with nervous learners and those who have lost confidence. FoFo is also good with nervous learners, and Sergiu explains why a mistake happened, so you understand it and can move on.
If the first match does not feel right, say so. Feeling at ease with your instructor makes a real difference. Our general lessons for nervous drivers page explains our approach, and if you live near the boundary you might also read about nervous driver lessons in Thorne.
Book lessons at a time of day when the roads are calmer, avoiding the school run outside Marshland Primary Academy until you feel ready. Have something to eat beforehand, and tell your instructor if you need a break. An automatic can also help, because there is no clutch to stall. See our page on automatic driving lessons in Moorends.
It can also help to watch the road from the passenger seat when someone else drives. Notice where the buses stop on Marshland Road, or how traffic behaves where it meets King Edward Road, so those places feel familiar before you drive them yourself. Our main driving lessons in Moorends page explains pick-ups and other lesson types.

Yes. Your instructor will help you pull over somewhere safe and you can take as long as you need. If you want to end the lesson there, that is your choice. You can pick up where you left off next time.
It can happen, and it says more about them than about you. Your instructor will help you focus on driving safely and ignore the pressure. Learner plates and an instructor beside you make it clear you are learning, which usually earns you some patience.
No. Motorway driving is not part of the practical test, so it is optional. Some learners take a motorway lesson later for confidence, especially with the M18 so close, but only if they want to.
Some nerves on test day are normal. Practising in test conditions helps, and a mock test is a good way to do that. Our page on mock driving tests in Moorends explains how it works.
