Driving lessons in Auckley

Driving lessons in Auckley with Alma Driving School start wherever suits you in the village, from your front door off Hayfield Lane to the gates of New College Doncaster on Hurst Lane. We teach in dual controlled manual and automatic cars and build you up from quiet estate roads to the Great Yorkshire Way.

Where Auckley sits and what that means for learning

Auckley is a village in the DN9 postcode district, about five miles east of Doncaster city centre. The civil parish also takes in Hayfield Green, and the village sits in the Finningley ward alongside Branton and Blaxton. For a learner that position is useful: within a few minutes of home you can be on narrow village roads, modern housing estates, a level crossing or a fast link road with large roundabouts.

The village grew in the 1960s when homes were built for RAF families, starting with the Spey Drive estate, and more housing followed around Hayfield Lane once the old airfield was redeveloped. That mix gives you parked cars and tight turns on older streets. Wider roads with newer layouts are close by.

The former Doncaster Sheffield Airport site lies just beyond the village. It closed to passenger flights in November 2022, and plans to bring the site into public ownership and reopen it are now under way. For now there is no airport traffic, but the roads built to serve it are still part of everyday driving here.

An Auckley route from first lesson to test standard

Every learner moves at their own pace, but most Auckley pupils follow a similar pattern. Your beginner driving lessons in Auckley usually start on the residential roads around Spey Drive and the tree-named avenues such as Larch Avenue and Walnut Avenue, where you can learn the cockpit drill and then practise moving off and stopping at the kerb without much traffic behind you.

  1. Main Street (B1396): the heart of the village. Expect bus stops and parked cars to work around. Good for meet-and-pass decisions and planning ahead.
  2. Hurst Lane: home to both The Hayfield School and New College Doncaster, so school-run timings bring buses as well as parents and students on foot.
  3. Gate House Lane: a railway level crossing near Mosham Road, where you learn to read the warning lights and wait patiently.
  4. Great Yorkshire Way (A6182): the link road from the Hurst Lane roundabout towards Parrots Corner and the M18, ideal for lane discipline at higher speeds and for planning your exit well before each roundabout.

From there you head out through Branton on the B1396 and onto the A638 Bawtry Road. Busier traffic and multi-lane roundabouts there bring you close to test standard.

Pick-up points around the village

Your instructor can collect you from home, work, school or college. Popular pick-up points include New College Doncaster and The Hayfield School on Hurst Lane, which suit students who want a lesson straight after their last class. Parents often book lessons around drop-off at Hayfield Lane Primary School or Auckley School on School Lane.

If you work at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Warning Tongue Lane, a lesson can start from the end of your shift. We simply agree a safe place to meet, away from the main visitor car park at busy times. Learners living in Hayfield Green can be collected from home as well.

Getting from Auckley to the Doncaster test centre

Doncaster's practical driving test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of the city, roughly three miles from Junction 4 of the M18. From Auckley there are two sensible ways to get there during lessons.

  • Through the villages: along Main Street into Branton on the B1396 Doncaster Road, then up through Old Cantley towards Armthorpe. This way gives you village junctions and changes of speed limit, where good observation matters.
  • By motorway: Great Yorkshire Way to M18 Junction 3, then north to Junction 4. Learners can drive on the motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car, so this can become part of your training once you are ready.

We spend time on roads like the ones you will meet on test around the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, so the area feels familiar before the day itself. Our guide to what to expect on the Doncaster driving test covers the eyesight check, show me tell me questions and the independent drive.

Lesson types for Auckley learners

Not sure which gearbox to learn in? Our guide on choosing a manual or automatic licence explains the difference, and you can see current rates and packages on our prices page.

Choosing a male or female instructor

Some learners feel more relaxed with a particular instructor, and you are welcome to ask. We have female driving instructors and male driving instructors, all DBS checked and most of them DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs). Loredana, one of our co-founders, is especially good with nervous learners, and Diana teaches in automatic cars around busy family timetables.

Alma is a family-run school, set up in Doncaster in 2022 by Loredana and Alexandru. You can read what pupils say on our reviews page, or call 07402 034084 to talk through times that work for you. WhatsApp is fine too.

Questions from Auckley learners

Do you pick up from New College Doncaster in Auckley?

Yes. Many students book a lesson straight after college, and we can meet you near New College Doncaster on Hurst Lane. Let us know your timetable when you book so we can avoid the busiest minutes when buses and parents are leaving the site.

Will I drive on the Great Yorkshire Way during lessons?

Once you are confident with roundabouts and moving up through the gears, yes. The Great Yorkshire Way gives good practice at higher speeds. You also work on lane choice and reading signs early, and it links Auckley to the A638 Bawtry Road and the M18.

Is the airport near Auckley open again?

Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed to passenger flights in 2022. The regional mayor has announced plans to buy the site, but there are no passenger flights at the moment, so airport traffic does not affect lessons.

How do I get started with lessons in Auckley?

First apply for your provisional licence on GOV.UK, which you can do from 15 years and 9 months. Then call or WhatsApp us on 07402 034084 and we will arrange your first lesson from home or from your school or workplace. You can also start revising with our theory test guide.
