Booking a mock driving test from Auckley means sitting a complete practice exam, with your own instructor in the passenger seat acting as examiner. You drive out of the village towards the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, every error goes on the official DVSA sheet, and the session ends with a written debrief.
Set aside roughly two hours. Around 40 minutes of that is driving, matching the length of a real practical test, and the remainder covers the briefing at the start and the debrief at the end. During the drive your instructor says very little beyond directions, because an examiner would do the same. That silence is often the part learners find strangest.
On the real day you set off from the Shaw Wood Business Park centre. A mock can begin at your front door instead. One common plan leaves along Main Street, the B1396, crosses into Branton and continues through Old Cantley towards Armthorpe. Along the way you deal with changing speed limits, junctions where the view is restricted and stretches where oncoming traffic needs careful judgement.
Your instructor may add the Great Yorkshire Way and the A638 Bawtry Road, taking in Parrots Corner as well as the Racecourse Roundabout, to see how you handle lane markings on larger roundabouts. The aim is to give you comparable roads on the Armthorpe side, with similar junction types, so the conditions feel close to the real thing. The Doncaster driving test guide covers what happens at the centre itself.
The DVSA sheet sorts every error into one of three bands. A driving fault is a minor slip that would not be dangerous on its own. A serious fault is one that could have caused danger. A dangerous fault means danger really did arise for you or for someone nearby.
The real pass standard is no more than 15 driving faults along with zero serious or dangerous ones. Your mock uses the same standard, so the outcome gives you a fair reading of where you are. Watch for patterns: several small faults of one kind, such as late mirror checks before slowing on Doncaster Road, can point to a habit that needs fixing.
Once the drive is over you park up somewhere quiet, and your instructor talks you through each mark on the sheet. You then take a written debrief home, listing your strengths alongside the things that need work. It becomes the plan for your remaining lessons, and for any private practice with family.
This is usually where the value lies. If the Gate House Lane level crossing caught you out, or you picked the wrong lane at the Hurst Lane roundabout, you leave knowing exactly what to work on next.
On the day of the real test, you are allowed to have your instructor ride along in the back seat, which many learners find reassuring. Plan on about two hours in total. Roughly 40 minutes is the drive itself, the same as a real test. The rest covers the opening checks and questions at the start, plus the debrief at the end where your instructor goes through the marking sheet with you.
It is marked to the same DVSA standard, so it gives a fair picture. No mock can predict a real result exactly, since the traffic on the day can differ and so can your nerves, but if you pass a mock comfortably you are usually close to test standard.
Very much so. Bring your old test report and your instructor will make sure the mock tests those weak spots. The written debrief then shows whether those faults have gone or still need attention before your next attempt.
No one outside DVSA knows which roads an examiner will pick on a given day, because routes are not published. What we can do is use comparable roads on the Armthorpe side of the city, with the same sorts of junctions and roundabouts.
