Mock driving test in Finningley

A mock driving test from Finningley is a dress rehearsal for the real thing. Your instructor stops teaching and starts observing, marking your drive just as a DVSA examiner would. You finish with a written debrief that shows exactly where you stand.

Why rehearse before the real test

Plenty of learners drive well with an instructor beside them and then struggle on test day, often because they are not used to driving in silence. A mock removes some of that shock. It shows how you cope with nerves, how you follow directions without prompts and whether any small habits are creeping in.

It is especially useful for Finningley learners whose test is coming up in the next few weeks, and for anyone who has failed before and wants to check the old faults are fixed.

What the session includes

The whole mock takes about two hours with the debrief included. It opens with an eyesight check, where you read a number plate at 20 metres. Then comes a tell me question about the car before you set off, and later a show me question that you answer while driving.

The drive itself lasts around 40 minutes. About half of that is independent driving, when you follow sat nav directions or traffic signs on your own. You will also be asked to carry out one reversing exercise, which could be parallel parking, parking in a bay or pulling up on the right and reversing for about two car lengths. Your instructor may add an emergency stop, because that is part of some real tests.

A mock drive out of Finningley

The real test begins at the Shaw Wood Business Park centre on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, but a mock usually starts from your home. From Finningley, a typical mock drive might take in the A614 level crossing, then head north-west into Auckley and follow the B1396 through Branton before going on through Old Cantley towards Armthorpe.

That gives a realistic mix of conditions: village streets with parked cars, rural stretches where speed judgement matters and busier junctions as you get closer to the city. Your instructor may also include the Great Yorkshire Way roundabouts. DVSA does not publish test routes, so the goal is to practise on similar types of road. Our guide on what to expect at the Doncaster test explains the day itself.

Understanding your marks

Your instructor records every fault on the DVSA marking sheet. Minor errors are driving faults. A fault that could have been dangerous is a serious fault, and one that created real danger is a dangerous fault.

A real pass allows up to 15 driving faults but no serious or dangerous faults at all. In the debrief, your instructor will point out patterns, for example repeated late observation at junctions on Station Road or hesitation at the Blaxton roundabout, so you know what to work on.

After your mock

You keep the written debrief, which makes a handy checklist for your final lessons and any practice with family. If the mock shows you are not ready yet, it is far better to find out now than on test day.

On the day of your real test you can ask for your instructor to sit in the back, which some learners find calming. See our main mock driving test page for more details. Mock driving tests in Finningley: your questions

When should I book a mock test from Finningley?

Most learners book one in the last few weeks before their practical test, once they are driving independently. It leaves enough time to fix any faults the mock reveals. If you have failed a test before, a mock soon afterwards can help you get back on track.

Does a mock test take place at the test centre?

Your mock usually starts from home in Finningley, but the drive heads towards the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, where the test centre is. That way you get used to the kinds of roads and junctions in that part of the city.

What does the written debrief include?

It lists the faults recorded on the DVSA marking sheet, sorted into driving, serious and dangerous faults, along with notes on what went well. It is yours to keep, and your instructor will use it to plan your remaining lessons with you.

Can I do a mock in an automatic car?

Yes. Mock tests are available in manual and automatic cars. The test format and marking are the same whichever gearbox you use, so the mock gives a fair picture either way.
