Manual driving lessons in Finningley make good use of a village where the main road, the A614, runs straight through. You learn clutch control in the quiet closes off Station Road, then put your gear changes to work on the run north to Blaxton. A manual pass lets you drive automatics too.
The cul-de-sacs off Station Road, such as Bells Close and Station Close, are where many Finningley learners first feel the biting point. Turning into a close at walking pace asks you to balance the clutch and a touch of gas while you steer, which is the exact skill that stops a car from lurching or stalling.
Your instructor may ask you to stop, hold the car still for a moment with the clutch, and then creep forward a metre or two. Doing that again and again builds a feel for the pedal that no amount of reading can give you. When it goes wrong, the dual controls are there, and a stall on a quiet close costs nothing but a restart.
The A614 is the Bawtry to Thorne road, and from Finningley it heads north towards the roundabout by the Bluebell Inn in Blaxton. Once past the village limit you accelerate briskly and move up through the gears in good time, so the engine is not labouring and you are not holding up the traffic behind.
Coming back the other way, the skill reverses. You spot the village speed limit sign early, ease off, brake progressively and pick the right gear for the slower road. Getting this rhythm right is a big part of looking confident on test, because examiners notice when a learner is still in fifth gear at village speed or crawling in third on an open road.
Finningley is low-lying, so for hill starts your instructor will choose a slope somewhere else around Doncaster once you have the basics. The principle is the same everywhere: parking brake on and clutch to the biting point, then a little extra gas and all-round checks before you release.
Where the A614 crosses the Doncaster to Lincoln railway, the crossing is worked from a signal box beside the line. Because it is on the main road, you will often arrive behind a short queue of cars, which makes it a fine place to practise holding a manual car still and pulling away smoothly.
Finningley itself has few roundabouts, so part of your manual training happens in Blaxton and Auckley and on the Great Yorkshire Way. The A6182 link road meets Hurst Lane at a roundabout and continues to Parrots Corner on the A638 Bawtry Road. These larger junctions ask you to settle on a lane and a sensible speed, along with the right gear, well before the give way line.
A common fault is arriving in too high a gear and then rushing to change down while also looking right. Your instructor will help you settle the gear early so your attention is free for the traffic.
Many learners in villages pick manual so they can drive any family car or work vehicle, or a cheaper second-hand runabout with a clutch. It can take a few more hours than automatic. Bogdan, one of our calm and patient instructors, teaches in a manual car, and our main manual driving lessons page explains the approach.
Friends just up the road can book manual driving lessons in Auckley, and those to the west can look at manual lessons in Rossington. If you want to compare gearboxes, try automatic driving lessons in Finningley. Everything else is on our Finningley driving lessons page.

Not once you are ready for it. We start on the quiet closes and village streets, and only head out on the A614 towards Blaxton when your clutch control and gear changes are steady. Your instructor can use the dual controls if needed.
You might in the early weeks, and that is fine. Stalling while you wait is harmless if the parking brake is on. The important part is moving off cleanly once the crossing opens, and that is exactly what we practise there.
Ask when you book and we will do our best to match you. We have male and female instructors, and you can see them on our female instructors and male instructors pages.
Yes. A manual pass gives you a licence for both manual and automatic cars. An automatic pass only covers automatics, so if you might drive a manual in future, learning in one now saves a second test.
