Driving lessons in Finningley

Driving lessons in Finningley start on the doorstep, in a village that gives learners an unusual mix: a main road with a railway level crossing, quiet closes near The Green, and the old airfield roads on the edge of the parish. Alma collects you from home in a dual controlled manual or automatic car.

Finningley at a glance

Finningley sits roughly six miles south-east of Doncaster in the DN9 postcode district, on the A614 between Bawtry and Thorne. It was historically part of Nottinghamshire and is now in the City of Doncaster. Blaxton lies just to the north along the same road, and Auckley is the next village towards Doncaster.

For decades the village was known for RAF Finningley, which opened in 1936, hosted Vulcan bombers during the Cold War and ran a famous air display before closing in 1996. The airfield then became Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Passenger flights ended in November 2022, and although the regional mayoral authority has announced plans to buy the site, there are still no flights. Freight services are planned first, with passenger flights expected later.

The parish church, Holy Trinity, is Norman in origin, and the village keeps a compact centre around The Green. That small scale is good news for new drivers, because you can be on a calm close one minute and a proper A-road the next.

The roads you work through as a Finningley learner

Your first sessions usually stay among the residential closes, such as the roads around Elm Drive or Silver Birch Grove, outside school drop-off times. From there, lessons widen out step by step.

  1. The Green and Doncaster Road: the village centre. Bus stops and parked cars here teach you to judge gaps and give way to oncoming traffic.
  2. Station Road and Wroot Road: streets used by the local bus routes, good for planning your position early and passing stationary buses safely.
  3. The A614 level crossing: the main Bawtry to Thorne road crosses the Doncaster to Lincoln railway here, controlled from a signal box beside the line.
  4. Out to Blaxton: the A614 north to the roundabout by the Bluebell Inn. Expect longer stretches and higher speeds between the two villages.
  5. Auckley and the Great Yorkshire Way: busier village traffic, then the A6182 link road to Parrots Corner and the M18.

The A614 also crosses the River Torne near the village and runs around the edge of the former airfield, so you get a varied main road within a few minutes of home.

Collection points around the village

Most Finningley pupils are collected from home. Parents with children at St Oswald's CofE Academy on Silver Birch Grove can book a lesson straight after the morning drop-off, when the closes quieten down again.

Teenagers who travel to The Hayfield School or New College Doncaster, both on Hurst Lane in Auckley, can be picked up there after the last lesson of the day and driven home as part of the session. Learners who work in Bawtry or Doncaster can also be collected from work, so you do not have to rush back to the village first.

Driving from Finningley to the Doncaster test centre

Doncaster's driving test centre is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of the city and about three miles from Junction 4 of the M18. From Finningley the usual lesson route heads north-west into Auckley, along the B1396 through Branton, then through Old Cantley towards Armthorpe.

That drive strings together most of the skills an examiner wants to see: village speed limits, rural stretches, junctions with restricted views and busier roundabouts on the outskirts of Doncaster. Later in your training, an approved driving instructor can also take you from the Great Yorkshire Way onto the M18 between Junctions 3 and 4, because learners have been allowed on motorways with an ADI in a dual controlled car since June 2018.

Questions from Finningley learners

Do you cover Finningley and Blaxton?

Yes. We collect learners from home across Finningley, and Blaxton is just up the A614. Lessons can start from either village, and your instructor will plan the session around the roads that suit your stage.

Is Doncaster Sheffield Airport open for flights?

No. Passenger flights stopped in November 2022. Plans to bring the site into public ownership were announced in October 2026, but nothing is flying yet, so there is no airport traffic on lesson routes.

How far is Finningley from the Doncaster test centre?

The test centre is on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, and from Finningley the drive passes through Auckley and Branton before Old Cantley. Lessons spend plenty of time on that side of the city before your test so the area feels familiar.

When can I start driving lessons in Finningley?

You can apply for a provisional licence at 15 years and 9 months and drive a car from 17. Learners who receive, or have claimed, the enhanced mobility rate of PIP may start at 16. Our theory test guide will help you prepare for the next step.
