Skellow lies roughly five miles north-west of Doncaster in the DN6 postcode, with the A1 along its western edge and Carcroft joining it to the east. Alma Driving School collects Skellow learners from home and teaches in dual controlled manual and automatic cars from the first lesson right up to test day.
Skellow is far older than it first looks. It appears in the Domesday Book, and Skellow Hall, built in 1642, is where Oliver Cromwell stayed during the Civil War. The oldest houses sit on the east bank of the River Skell facing the hall. The whole village sits on the north side of the Ea Beck valley.
The historic core along Skellow Road has been a conservation area since 1991. It centres on the old buttercross on a small triangular green, and the road itself passes through the mounds known as Cromwell's Batteries, which are actually the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle. Limestone boundary walls and mature trees line much of this stretch.
Most Skellow homes, though, are on the twentieth-century estates built for families linked to the local pits. Roads such as Crabgate Lane, Mill Lane, Green Lane and Hampole Balk Lane carry buses and parked cars. Quieter closes and avenues branch off them.
Stone walls and trees close to the carriageway mean you have to read the road carefully, keep your speed down and watch for people around the green and St Michael and All Angels church. It is a good place to learn that the right speed is often well below the limit.
The 351 and 361 buses work their way along Crossfield Lane and Mill Lane, then follow Crabgate Lane and Hampole Balk Lane. Sharing these streets with buses teaches you to hang back at stops, judge when a bus is about to pull out and plan passing places around parked cars.
Fields lie to the north and south, and the bus route out to Burghwallis along Grange Lane gives a taste of rural driving. The A1 runs along the western edge of the village, and the Red House Interchange, where the A638 meets the A1(M) at junction 38, is a short drive away for later lessons on faster roads.
Tell us your preferred pick-up point when you book and your instructor will meet you there. Lessons can also finish somewhere different from where they started.
The practical test centre for Doncaster is at Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of the city and about three miles from the centre. Since Skellow is around five miles out on the opposite, north-west side, getting there means a proper cross-city drive.
A typical way starts along Skellow Road to Carcroft, where four roads meet at one junction: Skellow Road, Station Road, Owston Road and Askern Road. From there Station Road (the B1220) heads south through Adwick le Street and on to Doncaster Lane, which brings you out at the Highwayman Roundabout on the A638. The A638 then takes you through Scawthorpe and down York Road into Doncaster.
Nearer your test, lessons spend time on the type of junctions and roundabouts you will meet around the test centre. Read our Doncaster driving test guide to see how the day runs.
If you want the widest licence, manual driving lessons in Skellow teach clutch control behind the buses on Mill Lane and Crabgate Lane. If you would rather skip the clutch, automatic driving lessons in Skellow make the Owston Park school run on Lodge Road much simpler. Complete newcomers start with beginner driving lessons in Skellow in the quieter closes, and anyone short of time can ask about intensive driving courses in Skellow, which make good use of the A1 and A638 on the doorstep.
Licence holders coming back to driving can book refresher driving lessons in Skellow, starting with the tight stretch through Old Skellow. Anxious learners have nervous driver lessons in Skellow, which build up slowly from the calmest streets. Disabled learners can book Motability driving lessons in Skellow in automatic cars, and when your test is close, mock driving tests in Skellow recreate test conditions on the way across Doncaster.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and they teach in dual controlled cars that are fully insured. Some learners settle faster with a man, others with a woman, so you are welcome to request a female instructor or a male instructor.

It gives you a lot of variety in a small area. You have narrow historic stretches, estate roads used by buses, quieter closes for early lessons and rural lanes towards Burghwallis. The A1 and the A638 are close by for faster driving once you are ready, so little lesson time is lost travelling.
Skellow is about five miles north-west of Doncaster city centre and the test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park is about three miles from the centre on the Armthorpe side. In practice that means a drive right across Doncaster, which your instructor builds into lessons before your test.
A provisional driving licence, which you can apply for on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months. You can drive from 17, or from 16 if you receive the enhanced rate of the PIP mobility component. The theory test can come later, and our theory test guide will help.
A manual pass lets you drive both types of car, while an automatic pass limits you to automatics but usually takes less time to learn. Our manual or automatic guide sets out the trade-offs, and your instructor can talk it through on your first lesson.
