Intensive driving courses in Skellow

If you want to pass in weeks instead of months, an intensive course from Skellow concentrates your lessons into a short period. Everything starts with a free assessment drive, and both the course length and the test booking follow from it, along with your price.

Is an intensive course right for you?

An intensive course tends to work well if you:

  • can set aside several hours a day for a week or more
  • have already passed your theory test, or can book it straight away
  • learn well through repetition and do not mind long days in the car
  • have a deadline, such as a job that starts soon or a place at college or university

Summer holidays are a popular time for students from Skellow, and shift workers often use a run of leave. If you can only manage an hour here and there, weekly lessons will probably suit you better.

The free assessment drive

We collect you from your Skellow address for a free assessment drive. If you have never driven, it may be no more than a slow loop of the closes off Hampole Balk Lane. If you have some experience, expect Skellow Road through the old village and perhaps the B1220 through Adwick le Street, so your instructor can see your road positioning and how you handle junctions.

Afterwards your instructor estimates the hours you need and sets out the course, with a price based on that estimate. You then decide whether to go ahead, with no obligation either way.

Why Skellow suits a short, busy course

Long days in the car need a wide range of roads, and Skellow has many of them close together. In one session you can move from the estate streets around Crabgate Lane and Mill Lane to the walled stretch of Skellow Road, then out along Grange Lane towards Burghwallis for some rural driving before joining the A638 at the Highwayman Roundabout.

Because these roads are only minutes apart, less of your course is spent getting somewhere and more is spent learning. The Red House Interchange on the A1(M) is close enough for dual carriageway and motorway practice if your course includes it.

An example week

Here is how a week might look for someone who has had a few lessons before:

  • Monday: controls and moving off on the quieter estate roads, then the first junctions
  • Tuesday: buses and parked cars on Mill Lane and Crabgate Lane, plus your first roundabouts
  • Wednesday: Skellow Road and the Carcroft junction, then the B1220 to Adwick le Street
  • Thursday: the A638 into Doncaster and the reversing exercises
  • Friday: independent driving with a sat nav, then a mock test

A complete beginner would need longer, and your own plan is set after the assessment drive.

Theory and practical tests

You will need a theory pass before your practical test date. The theory test comes in two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions, where 43 correct answers is a pass, and 14 hazard perception clips scored out of 75, where you need 44. Book it through GOV.UK. The Doncaster centre is in Fraser House on Netherhall Road.

Your practical test is booked as part of the course. On the day, your instructor picks you up in Skellow so you can warm up on the drive across to Shaw Wood Business Park. Before then, a mock driving test in Skellow is a sensible final check.

Intensive driving courses in Skellow: your questions

How many hours will my intensive course be?

We cannot say until after the free assessment drive, because it depends entirely on your current level. Someone who has never driven will need many more hours than someone who has had lessons before. Once your instructor has seen you drive, you get a clear course length and price.

Can I take an intensive course if I work shifts?

Yes. Tell us your shift pattern and the days you can take off. We can usually arrange the course around a block of leave or rest days, with the practical test booked at the end so you finish while everything is fresh.

Is the assessment drive really free?

Yes. There is no charge for the assessment drive, and there is no obligation to book a course afterwards. It simply lets your instructor see how you drive, so the course length and price are based on your real level instead of a guess.

What happens if I am not ready by the test date?

Your instructor will tell you honestly. If the course shows you need more time, it is usually better to add lessons and move the test than to sit it unprepared. We will talk through the options with you, including how far ahead DVSA needs to be told if you change the date.
