Mock driving test in Skellow

A mock test from Skellow puts you through the full practical test experience before the real thing. Your instructor plays the examiner, marks every fault on the DVSA sheet and then sits down with you to go through the written debrief.

What happens on a Skellow mock

Your instructor meets you at home in Skellow and starts the mock straight away. You begin with the eyesight check, which means reading a car number plate from 20 metres, then answer a tell me question before moving off.

On the drive you will answer a show me question and follow directions. A stretch of independent driving follows, using a sat nav or road signs. You will also do one reversing exercise, chosen from these:

  • Parallel parking at the side of the road
  • Bay parking, where you drive in and reverse out or the other way round
  • Pulling up on the right, reversing about two car lengths and rejoining the traffic

Some mocks include an emergency stop. The driving lasts about 40 minutes, the same as the real test, and with the debrief the whole session takes about two hours.

Roads a Skellow mock might use

The mock usually starts with local roads that test your observation: the bus streets around Mill Lane and Crabgate Lane, the narrow conservation area stretch of Skellow Road and the four-way junction in Carcroft. From there it heads towards Doncaster through Adwick le Street on the B1220, joining the A638 at the Highwayman Roundabout.

Your instructor then drives you on roads like the ones you will meet on test on the Armthorpe side of the city, where the test centre is. DVSA does not publish test routes, so this is about the kind of junctions and roundabouts you can expect.

How faults are scored

Your instructor uses the same three categories as an examiner. Small errors that are not dangerous count as driving faults. A serious fault is recorded when something could have been dangerous, and a dangerous fault when it actually put someone at risk. To pass the real test you need no serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 driving faults.

The debrief goes through the sheet line by line. You leave with a written report showing what went well, where faults were marked and what to work on next.

After the mock

The most useful part of the mock is what you do next. Your instructor uses the written debrief to plan your remaining lessons, spending time on whatever cost you marks. If observation at the Carcroft junction was the issue, expect to go back there. If it was the bay park, expect more reversing practice.

Some learners book a second mock closer to the test to check the faults have gone. Others prefer to finish with a normal lesson and keep the mock as a one-off. Your instructor will recommend what makes sense for you.

When a mock helps most

  • In the last few weeks before your test date
  • After a test you did not pass, to target the faults from the report
  • If you get very nervous and want to rehearse test conditions
  • When you are unsure if you are ready and want an honest view

Mock driving tests in Skellow: your questions

Will my mock follow the actual test route?

Nobody can promise that, because DVSA does not publish its routes. What the mock does is take you on roads like those you will meet on test, from Skellow across to the Armthorpe side of Doncaster, so the roundabouts feel familiar when the real day comes.

How soon before my test should I book a mock?

Ideally a few weeks before, which leaves time for lessons to fix what the mock shows. Booking one the day before the test can still help with nerves, but there is little time to change anything. If you have failed before, book one early.

Will my instructor tell me if I am not ready?

Yes. The point of the mock is an honest assessment. If the result suggests you are not ready, your instructor will explain why and what needs work. It is your decision whether to keep your test date, but you will have clear information to decide with.

Can my instructor come with me on the real test?

Yes, if you would like that. You can ask for your instructor to sit in the back during the test. They will not say anything while you drive, but they will see exactly what happened, which makes the debrief afterwards much more useful.
