Carcroft sits about six miles north-north-west of Doncaster city centre in the DN6 postcode, built around the junction where Owston Road, Station Road, Skellow Road and Askern Road meet. Alma Driving School picks up learners across the village and teaches in dual controlled manual and automatic cars.
Carcroft is a former pit village. Bullcroft Colliery worked here from 1912 until 1970, and much of the housing started life as colliery company homes before becoming council estates. The result is long, regular residential streets where cars are parked along both kerbs, which is exactly where a new driver learns to judge gaps and give way to oncoming traffic.
Skellow runs straight into Carcroft on the west side, Owston lies beyond the woodland to the north, and a string of small industrial estates along Station Road connects the village with Adwick le Street to the south. Farmland and woodland fill the land to the east.
The old centre is High Street, lined with small independent shops. Opposite the Asda superstore, on a small trading estate just off High Street, is the DFS outlet. DFS actually began in Carcroft as Northern Upholstery. Shoppers pulling in and out of those car parks give you plenty of low-speed work on observation and anticipation.
Every learner moves at their own pace, but most Carcroft pupils follow a similar path through the village and out towards Doncaster.
Lessons normally start from your front door, but we can collect you from work or college if that fits your week better. Common Carcroft pick-ups include:
Doncaster's practical driving test centre is on Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of the city and roughly three miles from the city centre. From Carcroft that means crossing the whole of Doncaster, so the drive itself becomes useful practice.
The usual way is down Station Road through Adwick le Street, along Doncaster Lane to the Highwayman Roundabout, then the A638 through Scawthorpe and along York Road past the Centurion Retail Park into town. Some lessons go the other way. They head along Adwick Lane and through Toll Bar before joining the A19 through Bentley, which gives you a different set of junctions to read.
In the weeks before your test, lessons include time on the kind of roads and roundabouts you will meet around the test centre. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains what happens on the day.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car is dual controlled and fully insured. Many learners feel more relaxed with one or the other, so you can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor when you get in touch.

The Doncaster test centre is on Shaw Wood Business Park, on the Armthorpe side of the city, about three miles out from the centre. Carcroft is roughly six miles north-north-west of the centre, so you cross Doncaster to reach it. Lessons close to your test spend time on the roads around it.
You can apply for a provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months and drive a car from 17. If you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP, you can start at 16. You need the provisional licence before your first lesson.
No. You can start lessons first and pass the theory test along the way, which many learners find easier because the Highway Code makes more sense once you have driven. You must pass it before you can book the practical test. Our theory test guide has tips.
Prices are the same across our Doncaster areas and are kept up to date on our prices page, including block bookings. Our Doncaster lesson prices guide explains how lesson costs compare and what affects the total you spend.
