Refresher lessons are for people who already hold a full licence but want help getting back to driving. From Carcroft you can work up from the village streets to the A638 and the A1(M) at Red House, at whatever pace feels right to you.
Every refresher starts with a chat about what you want from it, followed by a drive so your instructor can see where you are. There is no test at the end and no fixed number of lessons.
First sessions usually stay in the village. The junction where Owston Road, Station Road, Skellow Road and Askern Road meet is a useful early check, because it shows how your observation and timing have held up. If you live here you will use it constantly.
High Street is good for sharpening anticipation again, because buses stop near Queens Road and shoppers head in and out of Asda. Your instructor will point out habits that creep in over the years, such as coasting up to junctions or signalling late.
Parking is worth revisiting too. Reversing into a bay in a quiet car park, or parallel parking between cars on a street such as Park Avenue, soon shows whether your judgement has stayed sharp. Your instructor will cover whichever manoeuvres you feel rusty on, at a pace that suits you.
If you learned a long time ago, the amount of traffic is often the biggest change. The A638 between the Highwayman Roundabout and York Road can be busy at peak times, with retail traffic around the Centurion Retail Park adding to it. Bigger roundabouts need early lane choice and clear signals.
The rules have moved on too. Changes to the Highway Code in 2022 introduced a hierarchy of road users and new guidance on giving way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross at a junction. Your instructor can explain what changed and how it affects your driving around Carcroft.
The Red House Interchange, junction 38 of the A1(M), is only a few miles from Carcroft, so a motorway session fits easily into a refresher lesson. You practise joining from the slip road while matching your speed to the traffic. Then you work on lane discipline and safe overtaking before leaving at the right junction.
Since June 2018 learner drivers have been able to take motorway lessons with an approved instructor, but many people passed before then and have never driven on one. Our motorway lessons and Pass Plus page has more detail.
You can choose a manual or an automatic dual controlled car. If you passed in a manual and are buying an automatic, a session in our automatic car helps you get used to creep and the gear selector. We collect you from home or from work on Carcroft Industrial Estate. If you are new to the area, ask for a drive that takes in the routes you will use most, such as Station Road down to the park and ride at Adwick railway station or the A638 into Doncaster.
See our main refresher driving lessons page for how sessions work. If you live in the next village, there are refresher driving lessons in Skellow too, and the driving lessons in Carcroft page has local pick-up details.

No. Refresher lessons are for full licence holders, so there is no test at the end. You book as many sessions as you need until you feel ready to drive alone again. Some people want one or two lessons, while others prefer a longer run spread over a few weeks.
Yes. A manual licence covers automatic cars, and lots of returning drivers make the switch. A refresher in our automatic car is a sensible way to get used to creep and the gear selector before you buy one of your own.
It often is. Your instructor will start on quiet streets and build up gradually, and you can talk about what happened if that helps. Loredana is especially good with drivers who have lost confidence. You can also read about lessons for nervous drivers in Carcroft.
Male and female instructors covering Carcroft. Manual and automatic cars, all dual controlled.
Manual or automatic, complete beginner or coming back after years off. Tell us where you are up to and we will build a plan that gets you to test.
