How to book a driving test in 2026: the new DVSA rules explained

By Alma Driving School · Updated 4 November 2026 · 8 min read

Quick answer: You book a car driving test yourself on GOV.UK at gov.uk/book-driving-test. You need your provisional driving licence number, a theory test pass and a debit or credit card for the £62 weekday fee (£75 evenings and weekends). Since 2026, only you can book, you get 2 changes, and you can only move to the 3 nearest test centres.

Booking a practical driving test used to be something your instructor often did for you. That changed in 2026. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) brought in new booking rules in three stages, and they now apply to every learner booking a car test in England, Scotland and Wales. This guide covers how to book your test, what the new rules mean, and how they work if you are learning with us in Doncaster.

What you need before you book your driving test

Have these ready before you open the booking system, because once you pick a slot you only have 15 minutes to finish booking:

  • Your UK driving licence number. This is on your provisional licence. You need to have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months.
  • A theory test pass. You usually must have passed your theory test before you can book your practical driving test. Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years.
  • A debit or credit card for the fee.
  • Your driving instructor's reference number (optional, but worth adding). Ask your instructor for their personal reference number. When you enter it, the booking system checks they are free on that date, so you don't end up with a test your instructor can't take you to.

Learners in Northern Ireland book through a separate service run by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) on nidirect, and the rules there are different.

How to book your driving test online, step by step

  1. Agree with your instructor that you're ready to book. Under the new rules you can only make 2 changes, so book a date you realistically expect to be ready by.
  2. Go to GOV.UK. Type gov.uk/book-driving-test into your browser rather than clicking a search advert. Unofficial websites charge extra for the same booking.
  3. Choose a car test and confirm you are the learner who will be taking the test.
  4. Enter your driving licence number and theory test details.
  5. Add your instructor's reference number if you want the system to check their diary.
  6. Choose your local test centre. For most of our learners that is Doncaster driving test centre on Shaw Wood Way. Only book at a centre you actually intend to use.
  7. Pick a date and time. The service shows test appointments up to 24 weeks ahead.
  8. Pay and confirm. You'll get an email with your test reference number. Keep it safe, because you'll need it to change your test date.

The online booking service runs from 6am to 11:40pm, 7 days a week. You may be put in a queue when it's busy, especially at 6am on Mondays.

The new driving test booking rules for 2026

DVSA introduced the new rules to stop bots and resellers snapping up test appointments and selling them on. Here is what changed and when.

Number of changesUp to 6Only 231 March 2026
Who can book and manage the testYou or your driving instructorOnly you12 May 2026
Unofficial cancellation apps and websitesAllowedNot allowed12 May 2026

It is now against the law for anyone else to book, change or cancel a car driving test for you, including your driving instructor. A parent or friend can still help, as long as you are with them and do as many steps as you can yourself. Use your own email address and phone number so DVSA messages reach you.

Can you change your driving test date?

Yes, but only twice. Each of these counts as one change:

  • changing the date or time
  • changing the test centre
  • swapping your test with another learner driver

Changing the date and the test centre at the same time still counts as one change. Updating your address, contact details or instructor's reference number does not count. If DVSA has to move your test, for example because of bad weather, you go back to having 2 changes.

Once you've used both changes, you have to cancel and rebook. You need to give at least 10 full working days' notice to change your test date or cancel for free. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and bank holidays don't.

Where can you move a Doncaster driving test?

Since 9 June 2026 you can only move your test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it is booked, or back to the centre you first booked at. For a test booked at Doncaster, DVSA lists the 3 nearest centres as:

Test centreApproximate driving distance from Doncaster
Rotherham15 miles
Barnsley20 miles
Worksop20 miles

With 2 changes, the furthest you can go is one of those centres' own 3 nearest centres. Learners booked at Scunthorpe can move to Doncaster, because it is one of Scunthorpe's 3 nearest centres. Before you move, remember the route matters: practising around Doncaster and then testing in Rotherham means learning new roads, so talk to your instructor first.

How long is the wait for a driving test?

DVSA says half of all learners who took a test in August 2026 waited no more than 11.1 weeks. The figure is updated monthly on GOV.UK. Waiting times vary by test centre and month, and new driving test appointments are released at 6am every Monday for the week 24 weeks ahead.

If you want a test sooner than 24 weeks away, there is no benefit in joining the 6am Monday queue. Earlier slots appear at random times when other learners change or cancel.

How can I find an earlier driving test date?

The only official way is to keep checking the GOV.UK change service. There is no waiting list or cancellation list at most centres, and DVSA cannot notify you of earlier slots. Cancellation apps and websites that scan the booking service are now banned, and DVSA can suspend your online access or cancel your booking if you use them. Our guide on how to find an earlier driving test explains what still works.

Can I book a driving test by phone?

Normally, no. Car tests are booked online. You only need to phone DVSA (0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) for an upgrade test, such as upgrading from an automatic to a manual car licence. Contacting DVSA will not get you an earlier appointment, because staff see the same slots you do.

How much does it cost to book a driving test?

The practical car test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 for evening, weekend and bank holiday slots. The theory test costs £23. These are the only official fees, paid on GOV.UK. A test bought through a reseller or social media is a risk, as it breaks the new rules and may be cancelled. Our guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster sets out the full budget for learning to drive.

When should you book your practical test?

Book when your instructor says you are consistently driving at test standard, not when you first feel ready. With only 2 changes, a test booked too early is harder to move. Many learners book once they're near the end of their lessons and use the wait to practise test routes and take a mock driving test marked the way a DVSA examiner marks the real thing.

Alma tip: Ask your instructor for their reference number before you book, and send them a screenshot of your confirmation email. It's the easiest way to make sure the car, the instructor and the test date all line up.

What happens after you book

Your confirmation email includes your test date, time and test centre. On the day you'll need your provisional licence, and the examiner will start with an eyesight check (reading a number plate from 20 metres) and a vehicle safety question. Read our guides to Doncaster driving test centre, the show me, tell me questions and what happens on test day so nothing catches you out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quickest way to book a driving test?

Book online at gov.uk/book-driving-test with your licence number, theory test pass and payment card ready, because you have 15 minutes to finish once you pick a slot. Add your instructor's reference number so the date suits them.

Can my driving instructor book my test for me?

No. Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel a car driving test. Your instructor can help you choose a date and give you their reference number to add.

How many times can I change my driving test?

Twice per booking. Changing the date and centre together counts as one change. After 2 changes you must cancel and book a new test, with a full refund only if you give 10 full working days' notice.

Can I book my driving test before passing my theory test?

Usually not. You must normally pass your theory test before you book a car practical test. The theory pass lasts 2 years, so you must pass your practical test within that time.

Can I move my Doncaster test to another centre?

Yes, but only to Rotherham, Barnsley or Worksop, the 3 nearest test centres to Doncaster, or back to where you first booked. Each move uses one of your 2 changes.
