Driving test cancellations: how to find an earlier test in 2026
Quick answer: Driving test cancellations appear at random times when other learners change or cancel their test, or when DVSA adds examiner time. The only allowed way to find one is to check the official GOV.UK change service yourself. Cancellation-finder apps are banned since 12 May 2026, you only get 2 changes per booking, and you can only move to your 3 nearest test centres.
Waiting months for a practical test is frustrating, especially when you feel ready now. The good news is that earlier tests come up every day. The catch is that DVSA's 2026 booking rules changed how you're allowed to find them. This guide explains how driving test cancellations work now, what still helps you get an earlier test, and what could get your booking cancelled.

What is a driving test cancellation?
A cancellation slot is a test appointment that has become available again before its date. It happens when another learner cancels their test, moves it to a different date, or when DVSA adds extra examiner availability. These slots are often days or weeks away rather than months, which is why learners look for them.
When do driving test cancellations become available?
Cancellations come up at any time of day, 7 days a week. DVSA says there's no best time to look. They are not released with the new weeks of tests at 6am on Monday, which are always 24 weeks in the future. If you're looking for an earlier test, joining the 6am Monday queue gains you nothing.
The booking service is open from 6am to 11:40pm. Once you select a slot, you have 15 minutes to complete the change. DVSA can't send you a notification when an earlier appointment appears, and calling DVSA won't help, because staff see the same dates and times you do.
How to find driving test cancellations, step by step
- Book a test first. You can only look for an earlier date if you already have a test booked. Book at a centre you're happy to use.
- Go to the official service. Use GOV.UK's "change your driving test appointment" service. You'll need your driving licence number and either your test reference or theory test certificate number.
- Choose to change the date and look through the earlier dates and times shown.
- Check a few times a day, not constantly. If you search too often you may see a "search limit reached" message or an Error 15 and be blocked temporarily. Don't use more than one device at once.
- Be flexible. Early morning, late afternoon and other days of the week widen your options. Evening, weekend and bank holiday tests cost £75 rather than the £62 weekday fee.
- Check your 3 nearest centres. A Doncaster booking can move to Rotherham, Barnsley or Worksop, if you're happy to drive there.
- Confirm with your instructor before you take it. An earlier test is only useful if your instructor and car are free and you're test-ready.
Are driving test cancellation apps legal?
Not any more. Since 12 May 2026 you're not allowed to use unofficial services that scan the booking service for appointments, including cancellation-finder websites and apps. DVSA monitors the service, and if you break the terms and conditions it can suspend your online access, so you can only manage your test by phone, or cancel your booking.
Steer clear of anyone selling test slots on social media too. Only the learner can book or change a car driving test, so a "bought" appointment breaks the rules and puts your test fee at risk. Never share your driving licence number or card details with a stranger.
Can you swap your driving test with another learner?
Yes, legitimately, but it takes some planning and uses one of your 2 changes. Both learners call DVSA separately on the same day (0300 200 1122, option 2, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm), the second by 4pm. The request must be made at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two tests, both tests need to be the same type, and each test must be at a centre the other learner is allowed to move to. Never give the other person your licence number, certificate number or payment details.
Can you change your test centre to get an earlier test?
Since 9 June 2026 you can only move a test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it's booked, or back to where you first booked. For Doncaster learners that means Rotherham, Barnsley or Worksop. Wait times differ between centres, so checking all three can find you a sooner test date.
Think before you move. A test in Rotherham or Worksop means unfamiliar roads, and pass rates differ between centres. If you do move, book a lesson or two around the new test centre first.
How many times can you change your driving test?
Twice per booking. Changing the date or time, changing the test centre, or swapping with another learner each counts as one change. Changing the date and centre together counts once. After 2 changes you have to cancel and rebook as a new booking.
The 10-working-day rule matters for every change. To change your test or get a refund when you cancel, you need to give at least 10 full working days' notice. Monday to Saturday are working days; Sundays and public holidays don't count. Cancel at short notice and you lose the test fee.
What happens if DVSA cancels your test?
If DVSA has to cancel or move your test, for example because of bad weather or examiner illness, that change doesn't count towards your limit. You're reset to having 2 changes available, and since 19 June 2026 you can use those changes online.
Failed your test? Rebooking a retest
If you fail, you can book a new test straight away, but the date must be at least 10 working days away. Use the wait well. Ask your instructor for a debrief on the faults on your test report and book a mock driving test to check those faults are fixed before the retest.
How to be ready for a short-notice test
A cancellation slot next week is only worth taking if you're ready to pass. Keep your lessons going while you wait, so you don't lose skills, and practise the manoeuvres and the roads around the test centre. If you need to get test-ready quickly, our intensive driving courses pack lessons into a week or two, but under the new rules you still book and manage the test yourself.
Alma tip: Add your instructor's reference number to your booking. When you look for driving test cancellations, the service then checks your instructor is free, so you don't grab a slot you can't use.
