Mock driving test in Woodlands

A mock test answers the question every learner asks a few weeks before the real thing: am I actually ready? From Woodlands it means a drive down the Great North Road and York Road towards the city, marked fault by fault on the DVSA sheet, then a written debrief you keep.

The mock test, start to finish

  1. Pick-up. Your instructor collects you from home in Woodlands, just as the examiner would meet you at the test centre.
  2. Eyesight check. You read a number plate at 20 metres before getting in.
  3. Tell me question. One question about the car, asked before you drive.
  4. The drive. Around 40 minutes of driving, including roughly 20 minutes of independent driving with a sat nav or road signs, and a show me question on the move.
  5. Reversing exercise. One manoeuvre. It might be a parallel park or a bay park, or pulling up on the right and reversing. Some mocks include an emergency stop.
  6. Debrief. We park up and go through the marking sheet together.

The whole session takes about two hours including the debrief. Our main mock driving test page explains the format in more detail.

The route towards the city

From Woodlands, a mock usually heads out through a village junction onto the A638, past the Highwayman Roundabout and down through Highfields and Scawthorpe onto York Road. That stretch gives you dual carriageway and roundabouts, plus busy retail traffic near Centurion Retail Park before you reach the city.

DVSA does not publish test routes, so we never claim to drive them. Instead, the later part of the mock uses roads like the ones you will meet on test and the kind of junctions found near the Shaw Wood test centre.

What the marking sheet tells you

Your instructor records each fault on the DVSA sheet, from minor driving faults up to serious and dangerous ones. A pass on the real test needs 15 driving faults or fewer and no serious or dangerous faults. Seeing your mock result laid out that way shows clearly how far you are from test standard.

The written debrief is yours to keep. It lists your strengths alongside the faults to work on, so your remaining lessons can target exactly the right areas.

Getting ready for your mock

Treat the mock like the real day. Get a good night's sleep and eat beforehand. Bring your provisional licence and any glasses you need for driving. Have a quick look over the show me tell me questions the evening before.

During the drive, try not to look to your instructor for reassurance. Drive as you would with an examiner, keep up your mirror checks and think ahead to every junction on the way down the Great North Road.

Who should book one

  • Learners with a test date in the next few weeks.
  • Anyone who has failed a test before and wants to rehearse under pressure.
  • Intensive course learners near the end of their course.
  • Nervous learners who want the real test to feel familiar.

On the day of the real test, your instructor can sit in the back if you ask. Learners from the old village can read about mock driving tests in Adwick-le-Street. Still working on the basics? Try intensive driving courses in Woodlands or see the Woodlands area page.

Mock driving tests in Woodlands: your questions

Is a mock test as long as the real test?

The driving part is similar, at around 40 minutes. Once you add the pick-up and the debrief, the whole session lasts about two hours. That gives time to go through every fault properly.

What happens if I would fail the mock?

Then you have found out in time to fix it. Your instructor will explain each fault and plan your remaining lessons around them. Many learners improve a lot between a mock and the real test.

Can I choose which reversing exercise I do?

On the real test the examiner chooses, so on a mock your instructor will choose too. If you want extra practice on one exercise, ask for it in a normal lesson before your mock.

Will the mock include the show me tell me questions?

Yes. You get one tell me question before you drive and one show me question while driving, just like the real test. Getting one wrong counts as a driving fault, so it is worth practising them.

Can my mock start from work at Redhouse Industrial Estate?

Yes. We can collect you from work off Rockingham Way and finish the mock at home or back at work. Starting from a different place also gives you a chance to drive some roads you know less well.
