Alma Driving School teaches manual and automatic driving lessons in Thorne, picking you up from home, Trinity Academy, either railway station or work. The town gives learners a good spread of roads, starting with quiet estates for the first hours and leading on to the canal bridges and the market-town centre, with the M18 a few minutes away.
Thorne is a market town in the DN8 postcode district, roughly ten miles north-east of Doncaster city centre on the east side of the River Don. Moorends adjoins it to the north, Stainforth sits to the west along Kirton Lane, and Hatfield lies to the south-west. Past the last houses you reach Thorne Moors, part of the wider Humberhead Peatlands, so the edges of town give way quickly to flat open country.
That layout is useful for a learner. The Stainforth and Keadby Canal and two separate railway lines cut through the town, so you get bridge crossings and a flyover on the A614 to deal with. The M18 runs down the western side with junction 6 on Selby Road, and the Tudworth roundabout south of town is where the A614 meets the A18 and the M180. Dual carriageway and motorway practice are minutes away once you are ready for them.
Most learners begin on residential streets where traffic is light. The estate around Grampian Way and Cotswold Road, off Kirton Lane, is a sensible place for moving off and stopping at the kerb. On the north side of town, the side roads near Inglenook Drive and Willow Grove close to King Edward Road do the same job and are handy if you live towards Moorends.
When the controls feel natural we move into the older middle of Thorne. Around Horse Fair Green and Finkle Street you meet buses pulling in at the stops and cars parked along both kerbs, which is where observation and patience start to count. Field Road and King Street carry the Doncaster buses north towards King Edward Road, so you learn to hold back and give larger vehicles room.
Selby Road (the A614) takes you out past the Aldi on Omega Boulevard to the big roundabout at junction 6 of the M18, where Selby Road meets Waterside Road and Paddock Lane as well as the slip roads. Because it is multi-lane, good lane discipline matters there as much as an early signal. South of the centre, the A614 crosses the railway on the Thorne flyover and runs on to the Tudworth roundabout, a good place to learn how to read direction signs before a junction.
Besides your front door anywhere in DN8, common pick-ups include:
If you live a little further north, our page on driving lessons in Moorends covers the streets there in more detail.
Doncaster's practical driving test centre is at Heather Court on Shaw Wood Business Park (DN2 5YL), on the Armthorpe side of the city and about seven miles from Thorne as the crow flies. We use two routes in lessons so the area around the centre feels familiar long before test day.
The quicker way is Selby Road to junction 6, then the M18 south past junction 5, where the M180 joins and Doncaster North services sit, to junction 4. Learner drivers have been allowed on the motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car since June 2018, so this becomes a real option once you are confident at higher speeds.
The local way follows Kirton Lane into Stainforth before picking up Station Road and Broadway through Dunscroft to the A18 at Dunsville, and Thorne Road through Edenthorpe. It gives you village streets lined with bus stops and the Shaw Lane roundabout at Edenthorpe, which is good preparation for following a sat nav or road signs during the independent driving part of the test. Our guide to the Doncaster driving test explains what happens on the day.
You can ask for a female driving instructor or a male driving instructor when you book. Loredana, one of our co-founders, is especially good with nervous learners and anyone who has lost confidence, and Diana teaches in an automatic and is good at fitting lessons around busy family timetables.
Our instructors are all DBS checked and most are DVSA approved driving instructors (ADIs), and every car is dual controlled and fully insured. Block bookings and packages are explained on our prices page, with more detail in our guide to driving lesson prices in Doncaster. You can read what other learners say on our reviews page, and to book you can call 07402 034084 or send us a WhatsApp message.

Yes. Moorends runs straight on from Thorne along King Edward Road and Marshland Road, and we pick up across both. A lesson can easily cross from one into the other, so a Moorends learner can use the A614 and a Thorne learner can use the quieter Moorends streets.
The test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park is about seven miles from Thorne in a straight line, on the Armthorpe side of Doncaster. By road it is further. You can go by the M18 from junction 6 to junction 4, or take the local roads through Stainforth and Dunscroft towards Edenthorpe.
Yes. Since June 2018 learner drivers can drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual controlled car. Junction 6 of the M18 is on Selby Road, so a motorway lesson does not waste time getting there. See our motorway lessons and Pass Plus page for more.
