Mock driving test in Bentley

Think of a mock test as a dress rehearsal. Starting from your door in Bentley, your instructor gives directions in the same way an examiner would and marks every part of the drive. Afterwards you sit down together and go through each mark on the sheet.

What the mock includes

Set aside roughly two hours. The driving part mirrors the length of a real practical test, which runs to about 40 minutes, and the remaining time goes on the debrief.

  • Eyesight. Before getting in, you read a car number plate at a distance of 20 metres.
  • Questions. One tell me question at the kerb, then one show me question once you are moving.
  • Independent driving. Roughly twenty minutes of finding your own way, either by sat nav or by road signs.
  • Reversing. A single exercise chosen by your instructor. That might be parallel parking behind a car, a bay park in either direction, or stopping on the right-hand side of the road and reversing for roughly two car lengths.
  • Emergency stop. Some real tests include one, so it may feature in yours.

Faults go on the same marking sheet DVSA examiners use. To pass you need no more than 15 driving faults and nothing marked serious or dangerous.

The drive out of Bentley

Your mock usually starts from home. Your instructor might take you down Askern Road and Bentley Road on the A19, across the River Don on the causeway, and through North Bridge Road towards Church Way. From there, Wheatley Hall Road (the A630) heads east towards the Armthorpe side, where the Doncaster test centre sits at Shaw Wood Business Park.

Test routes are not published by DVSA, which means no mock can copy yours. What a mock can do is put you on the same type of road found near the test centre. Expect multi-lane roundabouts and busy junctions where lane changes matter. You also get a feel for how long the drive from Bentley takes, which helps you plan the day.

Your instructor also picks a place for the reversing exercise, perhaps a quiet residential street for parallel parking or a retail car park on York Road for bay parking, much as an examiner would choose somewhere suitable.

The debrief and what you keep

Once you are parked up, your instructor talks you through the sheet line by line. Each fault is explained, including why it happened and what to do differently. The written debrief is yours to keep, so you can look back at it before your next lesson or the real test. If the mock shows you are ready, you go into the real test knowing it. If not, you still have time to fix things.

Many learners are surprised by what they pick up. Faults often come from habits you did not notice, such as late mirror checks before a turn into Cooke Street or hesitation at a junction on the A19.

When a mock makes sense

  • Your test date is a few weeks off and you want an honest view of where you stand.
  • A previous test went wrong and you want proof the old faults have gone.
  • Nerves tend to take over on big occasions, so a rehearsal makes the real thing feel less strange.
  • You are weighing up whether to keep your test date or move it.

Mock driving tests in Bentley: your questions

How close is a mock to the real driving test?

Very close. The format matches the real thing, and your instructor marks the drive on the DVSA sheet while behaving like an examiner. What changes is the outcome. Instead of a pass or a fail, you come away with a written debrief that explains each fault and how to put it right.

How much time should I set aside for a mock?

Plan on roughly two hours from pick-up in Bentley to drop-off. Around 40 minutes of that is the test-style drive itself, and most of the rest is the debrief, where your instructor goes through the marking sheet and writes up what to work on.

Can my instructor come with me on the real test?

They can, as long as you request it. Your instructor sits in the back seat and stays silent throughout. Some learners like having them there, and it helps afterwards because your instructor has seen the drive first-hand and can aim your next lessons at whatever happened.

Will my mock follow the route of my actual test?

It cannot, because DVSA keeps test routes unpublished. Instead, your instructor plans a drive out of Bentley that takes in the same sorts of junctions and roundabouts found near Shaw Wood Business Park, so nothing on the day feels completely new.
