From Askern, the drive to the Doncaster test centre is long enough that the trip alone can unsettle people. A mock test lets you rehearse the whole experience first, from the eyesight check to the final debrief, so the real day feels familiar.
Many Askern learners do most of their early lessons in and around the town, on Moss Road, Station Road and High Street. The test, though, takes place on the far side of Doncaster. A mock gives you the chance to drive in a test-like way on less familiar roads, with no result hanging over you. It takes about two hours, with the debrief included.
It also gives you an honest read on readiness. If you are not quite there, there is still time to put things right. See our main mock driving test page for more.
The mock mirrors the DVSA practical test, which lasts around 40 minutes. It opens with an eyesight check, where you read a number plate from 20 metres away. You then answer a tell me question before setting off, and a show me question once you are on the move.
About 20 minutes of the drive is independent. You follow either a sat nav or road signs, making your own decisions about lanes and junctions. You also carry out one of these reversing exercises:
Some tests include an emergency stop, so your mock may too. The drive is marked on the DVSA marking sheet. A pass means 15 driving faults or fewer and no serious or dangerous faults.
The mock usually begins at your door in Askern. A likely way into the city runs down High Street and Doncaster Road, then along the A19 through Owston and Toll Bar and into Bentley. Church Way and Wheatley Hall Road (the A630) then head east from the city towards the Armthorpe side, where the test centre sits at Shaw Wood Business Park.
DVSA does not publish test routes, so the mock cannot copy yours. It focuses on the kinds of roads you are likely to meet on the day, such as multi-lane roundabouts and busy junctions. You also find out how long the trip from Askern takes.
Because the test centre is some distance away, your instructor may start the formal part of the mock once you reach Doncaster, treating the drive in as a warm-up. That mirrors test day, when you will arrive at Shaw Wood Business Park after the same long run down the A19.
Your instructor goes through the marking sheet with you and explains each fault in turn. You hear what happened and why, then how to fix it. You keep a written debrief, which is useful for planning your remaining lessons. Many learners use it to decide whether to keep their test date or move it.
Book a mock when your test is a few weeks away, or after a failed test to check the old faults have gone. Our Doncaster driving test guide is useful reading before the mock.

Around two hours in total. The test-style drive takes about as long as the real test (roughly 40 minutes), and the rest of the time is the trip and the debrief, when your instructor talks you through the marking sheet.
No. DVSA does not publish test routes. Your mock uses roads similar to those around the Doncaster test centre, along with the A19 from Askern, so you get realistic practice without anyone pretending to know your exact route.
A good time is two to four weeks before your practical test. That gives time to fix any problems the mock shows. If you have failed before, a mock can help you check you have dealt with the faults from last time.
Yes, your instructor can sit in the back during your practical test if you ask. They will not help you during the drive, but some learners find it reassuring, and it helps your instructor understand any faults afterwards.
