Askern is a long way from the Doncaster test centre, and that makes it well suited to intensive learning. Long sessions leave time to drive the A19 into the city and practise near the test centre on the same day, instead of squeezing everything into an hour.
Askern lost its railway station in the 1940s. Grand Central trains between London and Bradford still run along the line, but they pass through without stopping. For most people that leaves the 51 and 362 buses to Doncaster, which do not always fit around shift patterns or college timetables. A licence changes that, and an intensive course is the quickest route to one. Our main intensive driving courses page explains the format in full.
Every course starts with a free assessment drive. Your instructor collects you in Askern and watches how you get on, perhaps along Moss Road and then onto High Street if you already have some experience. From that drive they work out how many hours you are likely to need, and the price is set at the same point. Current guidance is on our prices page.
You need a theory test pass before the practical test can go ahead. If you have not passed yet, book it through GOV.UK before your course starts. Your practical test is then booked as part of the course.
A warm-up on Norbreck Road and Eden Drive, followed by the level crossing on Station Road. Reversing exercises come next on a quiet residential street, with bay parking in a car park such as the one at Askern Boating Lake.
Long sessions only work with rest. Pausing to talk through the morning lets the new skills settle before you head out again.
South on the A19 through Owston and Toll Bar, then along Bentley Road into Doncaster. Church Way and Wheatley Hall Road (the A630) then take you towards the Armthorpe side, where you can practise on roads similar to those around the test centre before driving home.
Students at Campsmount Academy on Ryecroft Road in Norton often use the summer holidays, when there are no lessons to fit around. Shift workers can turn a run of days off into a run of driving lessons. Parents sometimes book while children are at Spa Academy Askern or Askern Moss Road Infant Academy, keeping lessons inside school hours.
Drivers who have already had lessons elsewhere and have a test date coming up also use intensive courses to sharpen up. The assessment drive shows which parts need work, and the course is built around those instead of repeating what you can already do.
An intensive course asks a lot. If you can only manage an hour or two a week, weekly lessons will suit you better.
Learners nearer the city might compare intensive driving courses in Bentley. An automatic course is often shorter, so read about automatic driving lessons in Askern too, or return to driving lessons in Askern.

That depends on your starting point and on test availability. Your instructor will give you a realistic plan after the free assessment drive. Learners with previous experience usually need fewer hours than complete beginners.
Yes. The practical test is booked as part of your intensive course, at the Doncaster test centre at Shaw Wood Business Park. You must have passed your theory test first, so sort that out before the course begins.
Some of them do, because the test centre is on the far side of the city. Earlier days usually stay around Askern while you build the basics, then later days take in the A19 through Bentley and the roads towards the Armthorpe side.
Yes. Tell us your rota when you call, and your instructor will try to group lessons into your days off. Many shift workers find a concentrated block easier to manage than fitting weekly lessons around changing hours.
